8 Muscles work in antagonistic pairs.
Antagonism in biology means they perform opposite functions to each other. How do the antagonistic pairs work in insects as compared to humans? Both flexor muscle groups bring the limb inward, muscle groups are located on top of one another in insects, not so in humans. What action would it take for an insect to jump, such as a flea? From a flexed position, the extensors would have to contract powerfully and rapidly to extend all the muscles in the legs equally.
