KEY Patella: floating bone; kneecap Menisci: 2 oval fibrocartilages that deepen the articular faces of tibia, cushion any stresses placed on knee joint, & maintain spacing between femoral condyles and tibial plateau Avascular: devoid of blood circulation Anterior Cruciate Ligament: ACL: prevents femur from moving posteriorly during weight bearing and limits anterior translation of tibia in non-weight bearing. Posterior Cruciate Ligament: PCL: resists internal rotation of the tibia, prevents huperextension of knee, limits anterior translation of femur during weight bearing, and limits posterior translation of tibia in non-weight bearing Medial Collateral Ligament: MCL: prevent knee from valgus and external rotating forces. Lateral Collateral Ligament: LCL: prevent knee from varus force. Fat pads: (infrapatellar, anterior and posterior suprapatellar, popliteal) serves as a cushion to the front of knee and separates patellar tendon from joint capsule Genu valgum: knock-knees Genu varum: bow-legged Genu recurvatum: hyperextended Hemarthrosis: blood in a joint cavity MRI: (magnetic resonance imaging) provides a picture of the body; MD choice for detecting soft-tissue lesions. Translation: refers to anterior gliding of tibial plateau
