1 Unit 1 - Migration and Empire
Higher History Unit 1 - Migration and Empire

2 Issue - Economic impact of the Scots on the Empire.

3 I can describe the economic impact that Scots had on Australia, India, New Zealand and Canada.

4 (Places, People, History)
Starter What do you know about Australia, New Zealand, India and Canada? (Places, People, History)

5 Australia Read p37-38 p62-64 p77 Task 1 Find 5 ways in which the Scots had an economic impact on the development of Australia. For each example you need specific facts, an explanation of the impact it would have had and an illustration to represent the factor. Task 2 Which example would have benefited Australia the most? Explain why.

6

7 Task 3 Evaluate the usefulness of Source A as evidence of the economic contribution of Scots in Australia. 6 Paragraph 1 = Origin and Purpose Who wrote it and why would this make the source useful or not? When was it written and why would this make it useful or not? Why was it written? (Be precise) Paragraph 2 = Source Pick a point from the source and explain it by referring back to the question. You should also add a point which proves that the information is accurate. End the sentence with '...making it more useful'. Repeat this for another point from the source. Paragraph 3 = Recall 'However, the source is less useful as it fails to mention...' Make two detailed points of recall that are relevant to the question.

8 The source is taken from a book about the experience of migrants in Australia. This makes it more useful as the author would have researched extensively, and would have a high level of expertise on the subject of the success of Scots in the country. As it was produced in 1988, there would be a wealth of primary and secondary sources for the author to use, increasing its usefulness. The source refers to Scottish success in sheep farming. We know this is accurate as John MacArthur helped to introduce the Merino breed to Australia. In addition, the source mentions the Scots role in developing mining. This is true as James and Alexander Brown helped to develop coal mining in Newcastle. This makes the source more useful. However, the source fails to mention the Scots' contribution to the wine industry. The MacWilliam family helped to develop vineyards in Australia. Finally, the source omits the role of Alexander Macrae in establishing the Speedo sporting company. This makes the source less useful.

9 New Zealand Read p69-70 p79 Task 4 Take notes from the pages above. You need to have specific examples of the economic impact of Scots in New Zealand. Make sure that you include details of the names of individuals and companies.

10 1) Find a specific point of comparison between the sources.
Task 5 1) Find a specific point of comparison between the sources. The sources agree/disagree that (must be precise and must be relevant to the question.). 2) Quote to prove the comparison. Source B states "....", whilst Source C claims that "...". 3) Repeat this for another 3 points. 4) Finally you must provide an overall comparison. This should summarise what the sources largely agree or disagree about. Paraphrase the specific points that you have selected. You could also say if one source places more emphasis on a factor than the other.

11 The sources agree on; Scots responsible for helping to establish New Zealand's education system. Scots helped to improve the medical sector in New Zealand. Scottish businessmen helped to develop the economy of Dunedin. Scots were pivotal in helping to promote scientific research in New Zealand. Overall the sources broadly agree that the Scots made an important contribution to New Zealand's development. They agree that it wasn't only in business, but in education, science and medicine that the Scots thrived.

12 India Read p81 p45-46 Task 6 Take notes from the pages above. You need to have specific examples of the economic impact of Scots in India. Make sure that you include details of the names of individuals and companies.

13 Task 7 Evaluate the usefulness of Source A as evidence of the economic contribution of Scots in India. 6 Paragraph 1 = Origin and Purpose Who wrote it and what is their level of expertise? When was it written and why would this make it useful or not? Why was it written and would this be beneficial or not? Paragraph 2 = Source Pick a point from the source and explain it by referring back to the question. You should prove that it is accurate. End the sentence with '...making it more useful'. Repeat this for another point from the source. Paragraph 3 = Recall 'However, the source is less useful as it fails to mention...' Make two detailed points of recall that are relevant to the question.

14 The source was taken from a book on Scottish history by Arthur Herman
The source was taken from a book on Scottish history by Arthur Herman. This makes it valuable as the author will have researched Scottish contribution to the Empire thoroughly, and would be an expert on the topic. Furthermore, it was written in 2003, making it useful as the author would have access to a wealth of primary and secondary sources. The source contains useful, accurate information . It tells us that the Scots were key to establishing Indian infrastructure. We know this is accurate as Lord Dalhousie saw developing communication and transport as key to improving India's economy. The source also references the Scots contribution to education. We know this is true as Scots tended to be highly educated and developed schooling in other countries, such as New Zealand. However, the source's value is reduced by failing to mention that Charles Bruce began commercial tea planting in India. This became a key export. Finally, the source does not mention that the jute industry in Calcutta was developed using machinery and experts from Dundee.

15 Canada Read p75 p53-57 p31 Task 8 Take notes from the pages above. You need to have specific examples of the economic impact of Scots in Canada. Make sure that you include details of the names of individuals and companies.

16 Which country was most impacted by the Scots? Explain your answer.
Task 9 Which country was most impacted by the Scots? Explain your answer. Task 10 Connect each song to an impact that Scots had on the economic development of the Empire. Economic_Song_1 Economic Song 2

17 Success Criteria I can give ten examples of Scottish contribution to the economic development of the Empire.
