Offers some generalised description of attitudes towards war across Europe. Provides a few facts to support the statements made. Mostly well structured and written. 6 Provides a description of attitudes in the majority of the countries discussed and provides some supporting facts and explanation. Provides an overall summary of attitudes across Europe. Good structure. 7 Offers an explanation of attitudes towards war in each country (Austro-Hungary, Britain, France and Germany) and provides relevant supporting evidence. Provides an explanation as to why these attitudes existed. Well structured and written. 8 As in Level 7, but includes additional research to include more supporting evidence and attitudes of countries not discussed in class. Provides alternative interpretations to explain that not all people were pleased to go to war. 1

5 Task It is Christmas People were told that the war would be over by now. You have to explain why it isn’t. Read through pages Work in pairs. You are going to write two reports about the progress of the war from August to December One of you should write for the British Prime Minister, explaining events as fully as you can. The other should write for the general public back in Britain, trying to give a positive and encouraging message about how the war is going. 5
