S.M.A.R.T. S – Specific Example: Bad: Write a paper/article. Good: Write an article on coffee bean production in Vietnam. Goals are no place to waffle. They are no place to be vague. Ambiguous goals produce ambiguous results. Incomplete goals produce incomplete futures.

S.M.A.R.T. M – Measurable Example: Bad: Increase number of customers. Good: Increase number of customers by 10%. State in terms of percentage increase, unit increase, $ increase.

S.M.A.R.T. A – Attainable Example: Bad: Climb Mount Everest. Good: Finish 20 kilometer hike. Every goal should start with an action verb: Take, run, quit, finish, eliminate.

S.M.A.R.T. R – Realistic Example: Bad: Win World Cup Soccer Championship. Good: Join local soccer team. Stretch but not break. A goal has to be something that we can reasonably make “real” or a “reality” in our lives. There are some goals that are simply not realistic.

S.M.A.R.T. T – Time Frame Example: Bad: Lose weight. Good: Lose 20 lbs by 12/31. Trackable – Every goal needs a date associated with it.

Setting Smaller Goals Establish time frames for accomplishing goals.
Yearly Monthly/Quarterly Weekly Create monthly/weekly plans based upon your goals – “To Do List” – “Objectives”.

Suggestions Write goals down. Write “To Do List” down – Index Cards.
Keep operational goals small and achievable. Set goals over which you have as much control as possible. Prioritize your goals. Review your goals frequently. Create monthly/weekly plans based upon your goals – “To Do List” – “Objectives”.
