Aim: Explain the different types of Chemical Formulas
Notes 7-1
2
1.) Chemical Formulas : Have two purposes
a.) to indicate the composition b.) to indicate the number of atoms
3
2.) Monatomic Elements a.) appear as one element b.) noble gases
4
3.) Diatomic elements a.) molecule with two atoms attached b.) examples include BrINClHOF c.) Br2, etc.
5
4.) Compounds a.) subscripts: how many atoms of an element b.) CO2 1.) one C atom, and two O atoms c.) Ca3(PO4)2 1.) three Ca, two P, and eight O atoms 2.) subscript outside a parenthesis multiplies by all atoms inside parenthesis
6
5.) Types of Formulas: a.) empirical – simplest whole number ratio 1.) H2O, or CH3 b.) molecular – number of atoms in one molecule 1.) H2O2, C4H10, or H2O 2.) Some molecular formulas can be empirical like H2O
7
c.) structural formula 1.) shows the way in which atoms are bonded in a molecule
