Organisms share many conserved core processes and features that evolved and are widely distributed among organisms today.

2 Structural and functional evidence supports the relatedness of all domains.

Share certain traits with bacteria and others with eukaryotes …but also have own unique characteristics Many are extremophiles (“lovers of extreme conditions”)

16 Example: All eukaryotes have a cytoskeleton, a network of structural proteins that facilitate cell movement, morphological integrity and organelle transport.

17 Example: All eukaryotes have membrane-bound organelles, such as mitochondria and chloroplasts

18 Example: All eukaryotes have linear chromosomes

19 Example: All eukaryotes have endomembrane systems, which includes the nuclear envelope, the ER, the Golgi apparatus, and vesicles. Hint: this would be a great time to review the endomembrane system and what it does! Here is a simple animation for you:

20 The fact that all eukaryotic cells share these similar structures is evidence of a universal common ancestor.
