1
Bell ringer What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear, or see, the word “Marine”?
2
Was it this???
3
Or was it this??
4
The word “Marine”: Refers to; anything of, found in, or produced by the sea.
5
Marine Biology vs. Oceanography
Marine Biology is the study of life in the ocean. Oceanography is the study of the physical characteristics of the ocean Sir Charles Thompson is considered to be the “Father of Oceanography”.
6
Physical Characteristics of Water
Color Temperature Turbidity- cloudiness Salinity- saltiness Pressure Currents Density
7
The Water Planet Our Earth is made up of 71% water.
Most of that water is marine (salt). Less than 10% of the Earth’s water is freshwater. Of that 10% less than 3% is drinkable! What is the other 7%?
8
Let’s go to the Video!
9
End INVESTIGATION! When Ms.Lau says go:
I will have three minutes to put the pictures of various organisms into three groups based on how similar YOU think they are! I will work with my team to get the most similar organisms in a group! 3 minutes End
10
Why is it important to classify the information that we know about these organisms?
11
There are 8.7 million different species on this Earth.
……..that we KNOW of!!!!
12
Organisms have been evolving for millions of years.
There are about million species of organisms. So, how do we go about organizing all of these organisms?
13
Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778) Created Taxonomy
Taxonomy: system by which organisms are classified Why do you think there are more species today? Why is having a single system to classify organisms important?
14
Taxonomy: system by which organisms are classified
15
Naming System A Hierarchical system.
Domain - (broadest area) Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species – (most specific area) Every organism is grouped in each of these categories.
16
Let's Memorize It! Dear King Phillip Came Over For Grape Soda Domain
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
17
Which level is the most broad? Explain
18
How are organisms named?
Binomial Nomenclature= the way organisms are named First Word=Genus Second Word=Species EX: The Panthera tigris walks on 4 legs and is heterotrophic. THE POINT OF THIS SLIDE. Let students know that if they see this long latin word on the test that it means nothing then it being an organism. They just need to figure out how it is classified.
19
We are only focusing on……..
Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
20
Domains There are three Domains that all living things are classified under.
21
The Domains are then divided into _______
kingdoms Archaea Archaebacteria Bacteria Eubacteria Eukarya Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia
22
Eukarya Eubacteria and Archaebacteria
23
Archaebacteria Unicellular Asexual Reproduction Autotrophic
Oldest known living organism Live in extreme conditions (hot, freezing, salty, anaerobic)
24
Bacteria Unicellular Asexual Reproduction Autotrophic with Cell Walls
Peptidogylcan Live in a variety of environments. Examples: Salmonella, E. Coli
25
Peptidoglycan, also known as murein, is a polymer consisting of sugars and amino acids that forms a mesh-like layer outside the plasma membrane of most bacteria, forming the cell wall.
26
There are two type of Bacteria
27
Eukarya Unicellular or Multicellular Asexual and/or Sexual
Autotrophic or Heterotrophic Their genetic material is made of DNA, which causes them to be the most diverse domain!
28
Eukarya is Divided into 4 Kingdoms
K=FAPP 4 Kingdoms Fungi Animalia Plantae Protista hydrophytes
29
K=FAPP: Fungi Multicellular Both Asexual or Sexual
Absorptive Heterotrophs Chitin Examples: Mushrooms, Yeast, Mold
30
K=FAPP: Animalia Multicellular Ingestive Heterotrophs Examples:
Homo Sapiens, Cheetahs, Birds
31
K=FAPP Plantae Multicellular Autotrophic Cellulose
Through what process? Photosynthesis! Cellulose Examples: Spruce Trees, Grass, Sunflowers
32
K=FAPP Protista Most are unicellular and some multicellular
Like Plants (cellulose), Like Animals (no cell walls) Some heterotrophic and some autotrophic Examples: Algae Protozoa
33
Show Me What You Got! These organisms have membrane-bound organelles.
1= Archaebacteria 2= Bacteria 3= Eukarya These organisms have membrane-bound organelles. These organisms are considered the oldest organisms alive These organisms have cell walls made of peptidoglycan These organisms can be unicellular or multicellular
34
Show Me What You Got! These organisms conduct photosynthesis!
1= Fungi 3= Plantae 2= Animalia 4= Protists These organisms conduct photosynthesis! I am a Eukaryote that is unicellular, mobile, and an autotroph. What am I? I am a decomposer that has cell walls made of Chitin. These organisms can be unicellular or multicellular
36
Guess Who? Oh NOOOOOO! There has been a kidnapping! Dory has been captured and taken from her Family! We must figure out the perpetrator! Figure out what Domain and Kingdom the perpetrator is in! There are 6 clues around the room You will have 12 minutes to travel around the room to try to answer as many of the clues as possible
