Lier Frozen Planet Springfield House School- Information for Parents
Autumn Term Our topic this term is ‘The Frozen Planet’ Class: Mrs Janine McEvilly, Sam, Marsha and Pete English Our English lessons will focus around our exciting topic ‘The Frozen Planet’. Your child will have the opportunity to read Robert Falcon Scott’s diary and write their own diary entries and letters. They will produce a fact file on Robert Scott and research the Inuit people to produce a non chronological report. They will write an animal story based on a dilemma, produce part of a leaflet to persuade people to go on a new cruise ship and produce their own poetry related to the sinking of the Titanic. Each week we will focus on spellings, grammar and punctuation. Mathematics Your child will be improving their understanding of the value of numbers, rounding and ordering numbers up to 10,000 and understanding about negative numbers. We will be working on formal and informal methods to add , subtract and multiply numbers as well as developing speed and accuracy in adding and subtracting numbers mentally. Your child will learn how to classify shapes including quadrilaterals, recognise equivalent fractions and find common multiples. Geography/History We will be studying the landscape of the Arctic and Antarctica and the use of resources within these areas. We will be examining the lifestyles of the Inuit people and learning all about the enduring expedition of Robert Falcon Scott and his race to the South Pole. We will learn all about the historical event of the Titanic sinking and examining photographs of artefacts recovered from the ship. The children will learn about important dates relating to Robert Falcon Scott’s journey to the South Pole. Lier Frozen Planet PE Every Thursday, the sports coaches will be helping your child to improve their throwing and catching skills through a variety of fun games and activities. Your child will learn how to work as a team to outwit the opposition. Spanish Your child will learn basic everyday phrases in Spanish with Senura Sura every Tuesday Religious Education and PHSE/Citizenship In Religious Education the children will question ‘Is anything ever eternal?’. They will be looking at the purpose of marriage, hoe Jesus portrayed love and the meaning of heaven and hell. In PHSE the children will have the opportunity to identify personal goals and achievements. They will look at identifying their emotions and strategies to control their emotions. Art and Design and Technology The children will be creating amazing iceberg pictures using chalk, examining Inuit art and recreating some of their own, and creating ocean scenes using a variety of materials. Your child will be making a jam jar light and designing a new room on a cruise ship. Music The children will be using a new interactive music programme called Charanga Music World and will learn how to play musical instruments. Science In Science the children will learn how animals survive in the Arctic and Antarctica, how to classify animals and the importance of food chains. Your child will improve their scientific skills by investigating what materials are better thermal insulators, how to slow down the process of ice melting and how to test how waterproof materials are. They will be devising their own experiments and ways of recording results. Computing The children will be using the internet to research and learning about how search stations are ranked. Your child will learn how to create a PowerPoint , incorporating images, animations and sounds.. They will use Microsoft Publisher to create a newspaper on the Titanic.
