Divides till a hollow ball called a blastocyst forms Division continues, three cell layers form Ectoderm, Mesoderm, Endoderm Structures develop into embryo

7 First Trimester (weeks 1-12)
Differentiation begins Considered a fetus at 9 weeks Limbs, Fingers & toes begin to form Heart beat at week 5 Bronchi start to develop External sex organs Cerebral hemispheres of brain begin to form Heart, intestines, pancreas, kidneys, & liver form

8 Second trimester (weeks 13-27)
Joints & bones form Movements can be felt Sleep cycles regulate Rapid brain growth Eyes open and blink Lungs strengthen Urine produced

9 Third Trimester (weeks 28-40)
Fetus responds to stimuli Eyes closed during sleep; Dreams Body and scalp hair grows in Bones harden and grow Synapses form between neurons Fetus turns head down

10 Trimester activity Eyes open and blink Heart forms
Heart beat detected (weeks?) Fetus turns head down Lungs strengthen and fetus “breaths” amniotic fluid Bones form Considered fetus (weeks?) Sex organs develop Brain begins to form Body & scalp hair grows
