Welcome to Today’s Webinar Placing Ex-Offender Populations into Jobs Facilitator: Susan Golonka Director, Human Services Program National Governors Association Center for Best Practices

7 Placing Ex Offenders Approximately 65 million adults in the United States, or one out of every four, have a criminal record. In general, males who are formerly incarcerated work nine fewer weeks and earn 40 percent less each year than their counterparts without a criminal record

8 Innovative Approaches your peers are trying:
Promising Practices Innovative Approaches your peers are trying: Reviewing state and local statutes to dispel any misconceptions on statutory prohibitions regarding hiring ex-offenders; Promoting the skills, formal degrees and certificates of ex-offenders in order for employers to understand the value of hiring individuals with a prior conviction – this also involves helping ex-offenders build functional resumes which focus on skills and knowledge, rather than employment history; Conducting 30 day, 60 day, and 90 day follow-up meetings with employers after an ex-offender has been hired to resolve any potential issues and to provide case management services to the individual; Hosting annual recognition events that create positive ripple effects among ex-offenders, their families, employers, and members of the community, all of whom can play an important support role in the individual’s efforts to move forward.
