Explain the relationship between the structure of the chloroplast and its functions Explain the relationship between the action spectrum and the absorption spectrum of photosynthetic pigments in green plants. Explain the concept of limiting factors in photosynthesis, with reference to light intensity, temperature and concentration of carbon dioxide.

7 Comparison of the light dependent and independent reactions
Construct a table to compare the following aspects: Where do they occur? What is used and what is formed? Summarise the key parts Does it involve an electron transport chain? Photosystems? Calvin Cycle?

8 Light spectrum The visible light spectrum includes many colours, we are going to consider three regions of the spectrum: Red end of spectrum Green middle of spectrum Blue end of spectrum When struck by a particular wavelength of light substances: Absorb that wavelength Reflect that wavelength

9 Structure and function of the chloroplast:
Extensive membrane of thylakoid – Greater absorption of light Small space (lumen) within thylakoids – Allows faster accumulation of protons to create a concentration gradient Stroma – Allows an area for the enzymes necessary for the Calvin Cycle to work Double membrane on outside – Isolates the working parts and enzymes of the chloroplast from the surrounding cytosol.

13 Factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis
You have 2 minutes to identify the factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis Now turn the 3 graphs over and in pairs annotate these graphs to describe exactly what each on shows.

Make a note of these graphs and annotate each one to explain why they have that particular shape. Explain why the rate increases to begin with Why does the rate reach a plateau for Light and Carbon dioxide Why is the graph illustrating temperature change different?
