Physical Science Energy and resources
2
Mind mapping In pairs you are to create a mind map responding to the following questions. You have 2.5 minutes for each branch: Branch 1 – Uses (What do we use energy for?) Branch 2 – No Energy (What do you think would happen if there was no energy on Earth?)
3
Branch 3 – Resources (What energy resources can be used to generate electricity?) Branch 4 – Environmental Impacts (How do energy resources effect our environment?) (Are there some resources that effect our environment more than others?) Coal, Gas, Oil, Nuclear, Wind, Solar, Geothermal, Hydropower
4
Renewable/ non renewable energy
Year 8 Science
5
Earth is the only known planet that sustains life
Earth is the only known planet that sustains life. This is due to it containing a wide range of natural resources. Natural resources on earth include: Soil Air Water Plants Sunlight Minerals Natural resources can be either renewable or non-renewable.
6
NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES
A natural resource that once used cannot be replaced or restored We use these resources faster than the Earth is able to produce more
7
Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy.
NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!
8
COAL, PETROLEUM (OIL), AND GAS
Coal, petroleum (oil), and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.
9
HOW IS COAL MADE ???
10
HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???
11
HMMMM.... If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources?
12
RENEWABLE RESOURCES Natural resources that can be replenished or reproduced at roughly the same rate at which they are being used. Example: ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water
13
Why is energy from the Sun renewable?
SOLAR Energy from the Sun. Why is energy from the Sun renewable?
14
GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat.
Why is energy from the heat of the Earth renewable?
15
Why is energy from the wind renewable?
16
BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter.
Why is energy from biomass renewable?
17
WATER or HYDROELECTRIC
Energy from the flow of water. Why is energy of flowing water renewable?
18
What are the differences between nonrenewable and renewable resources?
SUMMARY What are the differences between nonrenewable and renewable resources?
