2. Early stages : Emergent Readers
At this stage children “pretend” to read. This is where children learn to understand the concept of moving left to right and turning the pages.
Children begin retelling the stories from visual cues such as pictures.
Students can begin to write their name or understand names of basic letters and shapes.

3. Early stages Continued
Children can greatly benefit from an adult reading to them and being provided with a learning center at home where they can practice reading, writing, and coloring.
Be sure to always read to them away from their toys so there is a separate learning area.

4. Early stages Continued
Children can use interactive language and here modeling is key to development.
Ask questions frequently about what the children are hearing and seeing in the story.
Allow for children to retell the story in their words.
Encourage children to read often.

5. Early stages Continued
Here there is strong picture support, a good understanding with repeated patterns and an idea of concepts with background knowledge.
There is a good development here of CVC consonant-vowel-consonant wordage and patterns.
Development of vocabulary that is vital to survival.

6. Emergent readers
Here readers are developing a better understanding of reading strategies. Here children are less dependent on reading pictures but are beginning to understand words
There is also an early phonics development and phonological awareness.
There is also a good understanding of site words that students use often.

7. Emergent readers
Here a use of smaller books that include site words would be beneficial.
Important to independent read. Choosing activities and books that spark an interest in the topics that students are learning about. This personal connection with reading will help students to learn and appreciate the written word.
