World Hunger

Review- What is world hunger?
When humans do not have access to adequate, clean, healthy food. How does this link to Food Security and Sovereignty? Security: exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Sovereignty: the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems.

Research Project In groups of 3 you will choose a country from the world hunger map You will research the reasons behind world hunger in that country You will present your research in the form of a Prezi, PowerPoint, or poster board. (If you have any other suggestions feel free to run them by me) Discuss the following topics regarding your country Hunger Statistics Global Market and access Political policies or taxes that impact hunger Natural disasters Small scale famers vs corporations Investments and fair trade policies Sustainable agricultural practices Moving forward (which relates to the previous two points)

Food Journal Record a journal for two weeks of how you attempted to reduce the amount of food waste and help the world hunger issue. Things to think about when recording: Is the product fair trade? Was the product past the best before date? Did you make any changes to try to avoid throwing out food such as Grant’s “eat this first” box. Go grocery shopping (or just stop in to a store to look around) and actively think about what you are purchasing. Am I choosing the veggies or fruit that looks most appealing? Think about how the grocery store is set up. Go to a grocery store and inquire about what they do with food that is expired or just about to, and their policies on produce (ex: does it have to meet certain criteria)
