Numeracy Across the Curriculum Chatelherault Primary School

Chatelherault Primary

3 Numeracy Working Party
Chatelherault Primary When adding/subtracting decimals, each decimal number should have the same amount of digits. This means filling in the blanks with zero’s.

4 Numeracy Working Party
Decimal Multiplication STEP1: x by 10,100,1000 STEP2: x by 2,3,4,5 etc Examples: x x 600 STEP 1: x 10 = x 100 = 6730 STEP 2: x 3 = x 6 = 6730 x x Chatelherault Primary Decimal Numbers Pupils are generally taught to move the decimal point to the right by 1,2 or 3 positions (x10, 100 or 1000). Note how a zero was added in Example 2 when multiplying by 100. 2 4 1

5 Numeracy Working Party
Decimal Division (multiples of 10, 100, 1000). STEP1: ÷ by 10,100,1000 STEP2: ÷ by 2,3,4,5 etc Examples: ÷ ÷ 500 STEP 1: ÷ 10 = ÷ 100 = 4.215 STEP 2: ÷ 3 = ÷ 5 = 0.843 The answers to STEP 2 were calculated using the technique illustrated in the previous slide. Chatelherault Primary Decimal Numbers Pupils are generally taught to move the decimal point to the left by 1,2 or 3 positions (÷10, 100 or 1000). A very common mistake is to divide by 10, 100, 1000 the multiply by 2, 3, 4 etc.

6 Numeracy Working Party
Chatelherault Primary Percentages and their equivalent fractions must be memorised.

7 Numeracy Working Party
Harder Percentages Calculator Method Non - e.g. 17.5% of 300 10% 300 ÷ 10 = £30 5% 30 ÷ 2 = £15 2.5% ÷ 2 = £ 7.50 £52.50 17.5 % e.g. 19% of £60 19 ÷ 100x 60 = £11.40 Chatelherault Primary Alternative method for using a calculator would be 0.19 x 60 = £11.40

8 Numeracy Working Party
Chatelherault Primary With decimal quantities the decimal point moves left or right respectively when ÷/× by 10, 100, 1000.

9 Numeracy Working Party
Solving Equations Examples: 3x + 4 = x – 3 = 3x + 7 3x = 13 – x – 3x = 7 + 3 3x = x = 10 x = x = 5 Rule: Change side Change sign Chatelherault Primary There are other methods used to solve equations but this method is predominately used in the Maths Department.

10 Numeracy Working Party
When working out time difference we will use the Counting On Method . This method will always work. Example : Find the time difference between 08 40 hrs and hrs 08 40 11 00 11 10 Hrs Mins 20 2 10 30 nearest hour what’s left + 09 00 hours 20 mins 2 hrs 10 mins O riginal time Time Intervals Chatelherault Primary Another method would involve adding on whole hours i.e to 1040 = 2 hours then 1040 to 1100 = 20 mins then 1100 to 1110 = 10 mins.

11 Numeracy Working Party
Chatelherault Primary Alternative method for perimeter could be (2 x 6) + (2 x 3) = 18cm

Heilander’s Porridge Oats Volume = l x b x h 27cm Volume = 18 x 5 x 27 Volume = 2430 cm3 Chatelherault Primary Generally, we show three lines of working. Formula, working, answer with units. 5 cm 18 cm 1 Litre = 1000ml 1ml = 1cm3

Naming Angles Chatelherault Primary DÊF is an alternative notation for angle DEF.

16 Numeracy Working Party
Horizontal Acute less than 90 o Obtuse Between 90 180 Right Angle exactly 90 reflex over 180 less than 360 Straight Line Angle Type of Angles Chatelherault Primary

17 Numeracy Working Party
Finding Missing Angles 120 o 95 Angles round a point always add up to 360 65 Two angles making a straight line add up to 180 (Supplementary angles) Angles opposite each other at a cross are equal. 34 115 146 145 35 right angle add 90 (Complementary angles) 55 Chatelherault Primary
