2. Terms Used Scholarship
a grant or payment made to support a student's education, awarded on the basis of academic or other achievement most often used for a specific institution.
Bursary/Monetary Award
Money given to an individual based on financial need, involvement and or academic achievement. Most often to be used for anything relating to post-secondary.
Student Loan
Loan given to an individual from the provincial and federal government to be paid back over a period of time.

3. Cost of Post-Secondary
Today, a student attending CEGEP, trade school, college or university full-time can expect to pay between $2,500 and $8,000 per year more in tuition alone – and books, supplies, student fees, transportation, housing and other expenses will all add to that total.

Use Canada wide scholarship data bases to search for scholarships/bursaries from post-secondary institutions and organizations
Databases are updated frequently and provide a comprehensive list of opportunities

6. Be Prepared
Be as prepared as possible when filling out your profile on a scholarship site to ensure you receive the most appropriate matches
Consider smaller scholarships – they often have fewer applicants
Develop a cover letter and resume that you can adapt for different scholarships
Create a record of you past and present community and school involvement. Often you need to demonstrate this when applying.
Before you apply – check the scholarships criteria and ensure you qualify. Applications from students who do not meet criteria are often not considered.

7. Give yourself time. Submit your documentation and application on time

Set aside an hour or two a week to work on the scholarships – it takes time to search and prepare applications!

8. WKC Scholarships
Every year WKC gives out over $2,000 worth of scholarships to graduating students.
Our scholarships are provided by past families of WKC, parent council, and local organizations.
Any graduating grade 12 student is eligible to apply for a WKC scholarship
In order to be considered students must complete the basic application form and provide a cover letter outlining the following:
Post-secondary aspirations
Community involvement
School involvement
Students are asked to read the descriptions of each award they are applying for, as some have specific requests in addition to the general cover letter.

9. Student Loans
Government student loans are a form of financial assistance provided by the government that you’ll eventually need to pay back.
The Canada Student Loans program offers loans and grants in partnership with provinces and territories to Canadians attending university, college, trade school or vocational school

10. Opportunities for FNMI Students
If you are FNMI student interested in post-secondary education Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) has two funding programs that could provide financial assistance for eligible Status Indian and Inuit Students to help offset tuition, travel and living expenses.
