1 Regional Updates to Immunizations Laws

2 Pennsylvania Currently:
Immunizations cannot be administered in the pharmacy to patients under the age of 18 Pharmacy interns are NOT allowed to administer immunizations regardless of supervision

3 Pennsylvania Possible changes Senate Bill 819 and House Bill 776
“I intend to introduce legislation similar to Senate Bill 254 of 2011 that will amend Section 9.2 of the Pharmacy Act to allow Pharmacists the ability to immunize children over the age of 7 with parental consent.” It would also allow licensed pharmacy interns to immunize under the direct supervision of a pharmacist who possesses an immunization license.

4 Ohio Currently: Per SB 248 and SB 58
Ohio pharmacists can administer immunizations to individuals 14 years of age and older Trained pharmacy interns, working under the direct supervision of a trained pharmacist, are allowed to administer influenza and Zostavax to individuals 18 years of age and older

5 Ohio Changes: HB 394 recently passed the Ohio House by a vote of 82-7
The bill would allow pharmacists and pharmacy interns to administer all CDC-recommended vaccines to patients who are 7 years of age and older.

6 Maryland Currently: Any CDC vaccine can be administered to patients 9 years of age and older Student interns can administer vaccinations under the supervision of a trained pharmacist

7 Maryland Possible changes:
No current vaccination changes are in the legislative process.

8 West Virginia Currently:
House Bill 3056: Patients currently have to be 18 years of age or older to be immunized in a pharmacy setting. Pharmacy interns are permitted to administer vaccinations to patients 18 years of age and older under the supervision of a trained pharmacist.

9 West Virginia Possible changes:
WV only recently (2013) have been authorized to administer vaccines to patients 18 years and older. No current changes are in the legislative process.

10 Indiana Currently: Any vaccine can be administered to patients 11 years of age and older Trained pharmacy interns are allowed to administer immunizations to patients 11 years of age and older under the direct supervision of a trained pharmacist.

11 Indiana Possible changes:
Indiana’s 2014 Legislative Day did not include any updates to the immunization process.
