1 "They have the right to work wherever they want to -- as long as they have dinner ready when you get home.” Men are the breadwinners, they must provide for the family, earning more than women, holding higher positions than women. "Nature intended women to be our slaves. They are our property.” Men have to be strong at all times, they can’t show emotion because that makes them weak. Connect the learning TASKS: Read through the statements. Discuss what you think they mean with your partner. Do you agree/ disagree with any? Explain why. CHALLENGE: Can you guess what our topic this term is going to be?

2 KEY WORDS Gender, sexism, debate, inequality
TITLE: Introduction to the Great Gender Debate LO: To understand how gender inequality is a key issue in today’s society. Learning Outcomes KEY WORDS Gender, sexism, debate, inequality

3 Gender equality is a big issue in today’s society and many of our assumptions about gender are based on stereotypes passed down through social and cultural expectations. What is a stereotype? Use the examples below to write your own definition: Boys, for example, wear blue, play with cars and love football. Girls wear pink, play with dolls and love make up. However, these are rather superficial concerns when placed alongside the inequality or discrimination faced by women and men in a variety of social and global arenas. During this unit, you will be exploring gender and why, as an issue, it is so frequently on the news. Tasks: Read through the information. Using a dictionary, find and copy down the definitions of the underlined key words. Watch the youtube clip - National Geographic interviews 9 year olds from around the world and discuss the ideas raised. Share New Information

4 Let’s Debate! It is better to be female than male.
STAGE 1: Get into groups of 4-6, divide into 2 groups: one for and one against the proposal. In your group, you must decide on a range of points to support your view. Write these down with plenty of detail and explanations. STAGE 2: You will be joining up with other fors or againsts to prepare for the debate in 10 minutes. Once in your bigger group, you will need to select 3 ‘speakers’ who will present your collective arguments in the debate. Challenge Activity

5 Demonstrate New Learning
Proposition A Define the motion B C D Rules of Debating: As followed in the Houses of Parliament  The debate is chaired by the Speaker, whose decision on all matters is final. You can only speak ONCE during the debate. Your speech should be about one-two minutes long. If you can, develop an argument rather than making a single point. But you can 'intervene' as many times as you like. To intervene is to ask a question about a point being made. E.g. Are those statistics up-to-date?  You can use notes to help you with your speeches and make notes during the debate which can be passed to you by the non speakers in your group. If you want to speak during the debate, you should catch the Speaker's eye by standing up as soon as someone has finished speaking. The Speaker will pick someone from those standing up. If you spot someone breaking these rules you should tell the Speaker. This is called a point of order. Demonstrate New Learning A B C D Opposition

6 Demonstrate New Learning
Proposition A Define the motion B C D Rules: The Speaker presents the motion. The first proposer presents the arguments for the motion. The first opposer presents the arguments against the motion. One of the proposers presents their arguments for the motion. An opposer presents their arguments against the motion. This side to side motion continues until everyone has had their say. An opposer sums up their group's main argument. A proposer sums up their group's main argument. Name one side of the classroom the 'aye' wall and the opposite side the 'no' wall. The Speaker re-reads the motion. Demonstrate New Learning A B C D Opposition

7 It is better to be female than male. ‘Aye’ or ‘Nay’
One side of your classroom will be labelled ‘aye’ and the other ‘nay’. After carefully considering the views presented during the debate, select a side that you agree with. Which side was successful? Review and Reflect
