3 Why is it important to protect your ideas?
Invention and innovation Invention is about making new items, or finding new ways of making items. Innovation involves bringing this new idea to the market, that is, turning an invention into a product. A business can use the law to protect its business idea. For example, an entrepreneur can: Register ownership of an invention or new process and be given a patent. This can stop rivals from copying the idea for a set number of years. Sue for damages if others copy their work - copyright automatically arises for authors creating books, films, music or games. Register a trademark. A trademark is a symbol or phrase that a company can register with the government to make their company distinctive. A patent, copyright or trademark grants legal ownership and is only given for original work.

4 Moulding plastics Use the Collins revision guide to complete the table for moulding plastics. Pages Vacuum forming flowing demonstration. The Process Shape This shape allows you to insert construction processes, finishes techniques, marking out techniques etc. You may have used the edge treatment of acrylic in your clock project (Cross Filing, Draw Filing, Scraping, Silicon Carbide and Buffing). All of these processes may be placed in a process shape.

5 flowcharts The Process Shape
This shape allows you to insert construction processes, finishes techniques, marking out techniques etc. You may have used the edge treatment of acrylic in your clock project (Cross Filing, Draw Filing, Scraping, Silicon Carbide and Buffing). All of these processes may be placed in a process shape. The Start, Halt, Stop, Display or Interrupt Shape This shape should be used at the start of the flowchart. For example you may place (Prepare Materials) at the top of the flowchart. The Decision Shape The shape allows you the make decisions. The shape usually has a line at the bottom of the shape leading to the next shape. This is the YES line. if the process has been carried out correctly the next stage can be carried out. The shape also has a line leading from the right hand side which is a NO line. If the process has not been carried out correctly we return to the previous process and either repeat it or attempt a different process The Input Shape As the name suggests this shape allows you to insert such things as a persons opinion about your project or you may comment on how your materials were input into a particular machine e.g. a Thicknesser and Planer.

6 CAD/CAM Advantages and disadvantages of using CAD
Can be more accurate than hand-drawn designs - it reduces human error. You can save and edit ideas, which makes it easier and cheaper to modify your design as you go along. You can modify existing ideas, which saves time. Disadvantages The software itself can be expensive so initial costs are high. There are free software packages though. Staff need to be trained how to use the software, which also adds to costs. Requires a PC. Advantages and disadvantages of using CAM Advantages In large-scale production, the results are consistent (always the same). Enables very high accuracy levels in large-scale production. Usually speeds up production of low-volume products. Disadvantages The software itself is expensive so initial costs are high. Can be slower than traditional methods for one-off or low-volume production. Staff need to be trained how to use the software and machinery, which adds to costs.
