Goals for Grade 8: Define body image, self-esteem, and self-concept Identify ways to develop a healthy life Understand the impact of self-statements on self-esteem

Classroom Guidance Curriculum
Objectives: To increase awareness about the source of beliefs about body size and shape To foster an understanding of body image as a social construction To encourage acceptance of self and others with regard to body size and appearance Understand body image and self-esteem

Results All 8th graders had classroom guidance presented by the school counselor Before classroom guidance nearly half of the students could define self esteem, self concept, and body image. Two months later, nearly 90% of all students are able to define those Students feel that self-statements can be negative and were able to develop healthier ones 86% of students are able to identify what is needed for a healthy life

Implications/Future Many students learned about healthy body image although may lack the knowledge about what students can do to change their lives More data needs to be collected on whether students know how to make healthy changes in their life.
