There are two ways to describe location:
Absolute
Relative

4. Absolute Location Its location on the globe
Using longitude (long, up and down) and latitude (side to side) lines
Paris France is 48o North Latitude and 2o East Longitude.
Street address (local location).
The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

5. How to read the lines Latitude- east to west Longitude- North to South
E and W
Longitude- North to South
N and S

6. Relative Location Location based on what is around it Examples:
Compare it to other places
Examples:
Close to, far from, a mile passed, etc…
Cardinal direction- North, east, south, west
Northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest
Hemispheres- Northern, Southern, East, West

7. Place What is it like there?
What are the physical and human characteristics?

8. Human Characteristics
Defined by culture; human ideas and actions
What are the main languages, customs, and beliefs.
How many people live, work, and visit a place.
Food, music, art, holidays
Ethnic groups

9. Physical Characteristics
Defined by nature
Landforms (mountains, plains, hills….)
Bodies of water (rivers, lakes, oceans…)
Climate/weather
Vegetation/ plant life
Wildlife/ animals
Natural resources

Definition: Group of places that have one common characteristic
3 Types:
Formal Regions
Functional Regions
Perceptual Regions

16. Formal Regions
1. Formal Regions: Certain characteristics are found throughout the area
Ex:
Political Regions- states, countries, cities
Climate Regions

2. Functional Regions: One place that affects the surrounding areas
Ex: Tennessee River Valley Region
The TN River affects the valley because it supplies water

20. Perceptual Regions
3. Perceptual Regions- Defined by people’s emotions associated
Ex: Dixie, has no “boundaries” but people have associated feelings with that region
