1 3.4 Solving Multi-Step Equations

2 Reverse the usual order of operations!
Examples: 5x = Subtract 3 first 5x = Divide by 5 x = 4

3 Example; 2 3 x - 10 = 18 Add 10 to both sides + 10 +10
2 3 x = Multiply by the reciprocal (both sides) 3 2 · x = · 3 2 x = = 42!!!!!!

4 Example: 4m + 8 = 10 Get rid of fraction by multiplying by -2 -2
4m = Subtract 8 from both sides 4m = Divide by 4 on both sides

5 Answer: m = -7 !!!!!

6 Writing Multi-Step equations!
Example: eight more than 5 times a number is negative 62 x = Subtract 8 from both sides 5x = Divide 5 from both sides x =

7 Example: Find 3 consecutive integers whose sum is 57:
x + (x + 1) + ( x + 2) = 57 3x = 57 Subtract 3 from both sides 3x = Divide 3 from both sides x = 18

8 Homework! Page #146 : 24-42 Multiples of 3!!
