The Church wanted to use Charlemagne to create a Christian Roman Empire to unite Europe; on Christmas Day in 800 AD, Charlemagne was crowned the Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III. Charlemagne used counts to assist him in ruling the empire.

3. Why did the Vikings leave their homeland to invade Western Europe?
Viking homeland in Scandinavia was overpopulated; they needed somewhere to go. The Vikings attacked settlements in Europe and stole what they could. These attacks weakened the stability of the Carolingian Empire and forced Europeans to come up with innovative ways of protecting themselves. 3.
