2 Pepin the Short AD Mayer of the Palace of Neustria at the time Childric was king. Duke of the Franks ( ) King of the Franks ( ) Father of renowned Charlemagne. Tension between him and his half brother, Grifo, whom also got the title of Mayer of the Palace, but of Austrasia. (Grifo eventually cast aside his title and became part of a monastery.) Throughout much of his rule, Pepin had to deal with the occasional revolts of his half brother who ultimately died in 753 in the Battle of Saint-Jean de Maurienne. patricius Romanorum (Patrician of the Romans). Pepin the Short's first major act was to go to war against the Lombard king Aistulf; the result of this war was the return of land taken from the church.

4 Charlemagne AD Known as Carolus Magnus, Charlemagne was one of the finest and strongest leaders of the Carolingian Dynasty. Expanded the Frankish kingdom into the Frankish Empire which included most of Western and Central Europe. The Pope Leo III crowned him Imperator Augustus (which temporarily made him a rival of the Byzantine Empire). Conquered Italy. Associated with the Carolingian Renaissance. His rule defined the middle ages of Western Europe.

5 Charlemagne

6 Carloman I The younger brother to Charlemagne, and son of Pepin the Short. He in not nearly as prominent in history. When Pepin the Short died, he inherited the poorer region of France, the central region, which was easier to defend, that share of the kingdom was inferior in its income to the land of Charlemagne.
