Objective: Demonstrate the rules and standards for electrical fixture placement.

Verify Fixture Placement
Outlets Lights Switches and switch leg connectors Miscellaneous fixtures Exhaust fan Ceiling fan TV Telephone Smoke detector Chimes/Bells/Buzzers

Placement of Switches Each room MUST have at least one light controlled by a switch Latch side of door/entrance Outside of closets Hallways, stairs, garage lighting controlled from both ends Multiple switches for large rooms

Placement of Outlets Furniture/Appliance Considerations
Living & Service areas One outlet per 6’ of wall No further than 6’ from each corner Kitchen area One outlet per 4’ of wall Each appliance should have an outlet Hallways Every 15’ of wall

Placement of Outlets Bathrooms Weatherproof outlets
At least two outlets One above sink or counter Weatherproof outlets Each side of exterior Position for decorative lighting At least one outlet in attic & crawl space Ground Fault outlets Near water sources

Placement of lights Sufficient foot-candles for each room
Illumination for desired activities Lighting over dining table Exterior General illumination and decoration Motion detectors for security Waterproof Lighting for stairs and halls

Shows approximate fixture placement Circuit design not included Electrical loads not considered Fixtures may be shown on Floor Plan Avoid crowding Using CAD Layers created for various details

Electrical Symbols Drawn in approximate locations Standard placement
Switches = 48” high Outlets = 12” high Note dimensional changes with symbol when placement varies from standard

Electrical Symbols Connect symbols for switches to fixtures with switch leg connector symbol Provide symbol legend Dimensions not provided except in special situations
