3 Cardiff West: Profile Population Unemployment Rate Life Expectancy
60,700 people live in the Cardiff West area, with a broad split of people across different age groups. 96.3% of residents were of white ethnicity, greater than the Cardiff average of 91.6% (2001 Census) This is the highest proportion of any of the six neighbourhood areas. Unemployment Rate Only the wards of Fairwater (5.7%) and Llandaff North (5.3%) in Cardiff West have unemployment rates above the Cardiff average (4.4%). Llandaff (1.9%), Creigiau/St. Fagans (1.6%) and Radyr (1.5%) have some of the lowest unemployment rates in the city Over the past five years the number of unemployment benefit claimants in Cardiff West has also more than doubled. Life Expectancy On the whole, life expectancy for the wards in Cardiff West exceeds the Cardiff average Radyr has the highest level of life expectancy in Cardiff. Fairwater, Llandaff North and Creigiau/St. Fagans have lower life expectancy levels than the city average.

Residents of Cardiff West were asked to name their priorities for their area according to the seven outcomes of the What Matters Strategy – the results are listed below: Outcome Priority People in Cardiff are healthy Reduce levels of alcohol consumption People in Cardiff have a clean, attractive and sustainable environment Ensure the city's streets are clean People in Cardiff are safe and feel safe Increase the numbers of high visibility police patrols Cardiff has a thriving and prosperous economy Improve access to jobs and training for young people in Cardiff People in Cardiff achieve their full potential Increase the proportion of children who leave school/ training with good skills and qualifications Cardiff is a great place to live, work and play Improve our public transport infrastructure Cardiff is a fair, just and inclusive society Improve employment opportunities for all by making a wide range of jobs available Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation Wales 2008 Overall the West Neighbourhood has low levels of deprivation Cardiff West has a lower share of its population living in the bottom 10% in Wales than the Cardiff average for every type of deprivation except Access to Services. 5 Cardiff West: Successes / Key Issues
Partnership Working (Night in the Cells, Summer Activities, TRUCE, iSay) “New You” (Health & Wellbeing project being delivered by Health & Leisure Services) Operation Perception (Targeting Community Perceptions in relation to fear of Crime and ASB) Key Issues Areas of Deprivation (Areas such as Pentrebane and the Gabalfa Estate being overlooked due to the relative affluence of the Cardiff West Neighbourhood)

6 Cardiff West: Priorities
Establishing task groups to target issues arising within identified areas including: Poverty and Social Inclusion NEET’s Unemployment Family Support Target ASB Older People Isolation Fear and Perceptions of Crime/ASB Health Issues Intergenerational Work Environment and Environmental Issues Motorcycle Annoyance Dog Fouling Areas where the physical environment lends itself to ASB Areas for regeneration

Motorcycle Annoyance Strategic response to Motorcycle Annoyance to be developed No Full-Time Motorcycle Team in place Funding often sought through Neighbourhood Management to support operations Service Areas/Agencies reluctant to take responsibility City Wide Workstreams How do the City Wide Workstreams relate to Neighbourhood delivery? How do Neighbourhood Management Priorities become City Wide workstreams?
