3. Cardiff West: Profile Population Unemployment Rate Life Expectancy
60,700 people live in the Cardiff West area, with a broad split of people across different age groups.
96.3% of residents were of white ethnicity, greater than the Cardiff average of 91.6% (2001 Census)
This is the highest proportion of any of the six neighbourhood areas.
Unemployment Rate
Only the wards of Fairwater (5.7%) and Llandaff North (5.3%) in Cardiff West have unemployment rates above the Cardiff average (4.4%).
Llandaff (1.9%), Creigiau/St. Fagans (1.6%) and Radyr (1.5%) have some of the lowest unemployment rates in the city
Over the past five years the number of unemployment benefit claimants in Cardiff West has also more than doubled.
Life Expectancy
On the whole, life expectancy for the wards in Cardiff West exceeds the Cardiff average
Radyr has the highest level of life expectancy in Cardiff.
Fairwater, Llandaff North and Creigiau/St. Fagans have lower life expectancy levels than the city average.

Overall the West Neighbourhood has low levels of deprivation
Cardiff West has a lower share of its population living in the bottom 10% in Wales than the Cardiff average for every type of deprivation except Access to Services.
