2. Artistic Statement
As an aspiring photojournalist, Matt Mitgang usually captures events through the use of fast shutter speeds. In this body of work, Matt hopes to push his envelope by using techniques that he does not regularly use. This body of work captures the unique scenes of nighttime and the emotions that they create. The streetlights and their unique color cast create interesting shadows and colors in the night. Matt uses this to portray emotions and feelings that are unique to the environment. In addition to the unique color cast, Matt uses perspective to influence the emotions created by the photographs. These emotions and feelings would not have been apparent if the photograph was taken at other times of day. Matt considers these photographs a window into his mind and emotions and as a way to show his feelings that he is uncomfortable sharing any other way. In his subjects and how he portrays them, Matt shows small and obscure aspects of himself.

3. Biography
Matt Mitgang began getting serious about photography in the fall of 2005 when he was asked by Mr. Haas to take pictures of the CCA Girls Volleyball team. He discovered that he was able to express himself through his pictures in a way that he was unable to do before. Matt is generally a very inward person and he finds that photography is the way that he is best able to show his emotions. Through his images, Matt reveals a small part of himself that would not have been otherwise shown.
