Unit 1: The Sentence A sentence is a group of words that tells a complete thought. It tells who or what, and it tells what happens. Start with a capital letter and ends with a period.

Statements and Questions
Statement: a sentence that tells something. It ends with a period. Ex: Tarik prays every day. Ex: He makes wadu before he prays. Question: A sentence that asks something. It ends with a questions mark. Ex: What time do we pray Asr? Ex: Can she fast during Ramadan?

Commands and Exclamations
Command: sentence that tells someone to do something. It ends with a period. Ex: Please sit down. Ex: Watch the ball. Exclamation: sentence that shows strong feeling, such as excitement, surprise, or fear. It ends with a exclamation point ! Ex: She hit a home run! Ex: Our team won the soccer game!

Subject of a Sentence Subject: part of a sentence that tells whom or what the sentence is about. Ex: Mohammed walked to school. Who are we talking about? Mohammed Ex: The pencil is on the desk. What are we talking about? Pencil.

The Predicate of a Sentence
Every sentence has 2 parts: SUBJECT AND PREDICATE. Predicate: part of a sentence that tells what the subject does or is. Predicate can be one word or more than one word. Ex: People hurry to the fair. Ex: The clown is funny.

Music floats through the air. A man sells prayer rugs. Jillian laughs. We bought a ticket for a ride. The ride is scary.
