Unit 5 Measurement- MAFS.2.MD. 1.1, MAFS.2.MD. 1.2, MAFS.2.MD. 1.3, MAFS.2.MD. 1.4, MAFS.2.MD. 2.5, MAFS.2.MD. 2.6
DIRECTIONS: Choose one activity from each shape group. Color-in the shape after completing the activity inside. All activities must be completed and turned in by February 3, 2017.
Estimate the length of any object in inches,
centimeters, feet, yards, and meters. Write down each estimate and the object you chose. Then measure the actual object in inches, centimeters, feet, yards, and meters. Compare your estimates to the actual measurement.
Choose four objects to
measure. Choose to measure all four in two of the following standard measurements: inches, centimeters, feet, yards, or meters. Then add all four objects’ measurements together in both units you chose. Explain why the results are different even though the items are the same.
Create a poster or comic strip explaining to someone why if I am measuringg using one unit of measurement, the result will be different if I change the unit of measurement.
Measure any object using a ruler, meter stick, or measuring tape. Measure it to the nearest inch, centimeter, foot, yard, and meter. Write down the object and your results. Explain why the results are different.
Choose three objects to measure in
inches, centimeters, feet, yards, and meters. Record your results. Then subtract the smallest length from the largest length in each unit of measurement. Which unit had the greatest difference? Explain your results.
Create a poster comparing the size of the different standard units of measure: inches, centimeters, feet, yards, and meters.
Choose two objects. Measure both using a ruler, meter stick, or measuring tape.
Measure to the nearest inch, centimeter,
foot, yard, and meter. Write down the
objects and your results for both. Then compare the two objects lengths. (Ex. The couch is 10 inches longer than the table).
Create and solve at least four
of you own word problems using four different standard units of measurement (inches, centimeters, feet, yards, or meters). Two problems must be addition and two must be subtraction.
Create a poster comparing the different uses of rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
