5 Lead-in & words presentation
1 What is “honesty”? Which of the following means “honesty” to you? Give your own answers if none of them matches your definition. Never tell a lie. B. Be open to parents. C. Seldom tell lies. D. Never steal anything. My answer:_______________________________ 2 Guess the meaning of each of the colored words in the following paragraph. Tom is a postman. His job is to deliver letters which are kept in envelopes. Every day he goes along the same route to deliver letters. He has to be careful with the letters. If a letter slips out of his hand and gets dirty he feels guilty and will apologize to the receiver of the letter and often he will gain forgiveness. Without his delivery, we would have to go to the post office to get our letters by ourselves.

12 To Be Honest Read the following quotations about “honesty”.Which one do you most agree to? Give some examples to support your ideas. A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes. Mark Twain No man has a good enough memory to make a successful liar. ------Abraham Lincoln Dare to be true:nothing can need a lie;a fault, which needs it most, grows two thereby. ------George Herbert We tell lies when we are afraid…afraid of what we don’t know, afraid of what others will think, afraid of what will be found out about us.But every time we tell a lie.the thing that we fear grows stronger. Tad Williams

13 Retelling Work in pairs and retell the story to each other. You may use the following words and expressions. You may begin your story like this: On a Saturday afternoon,a little boy and his friend were throwing rocks onto the roof of an old lady’s house… Throw rocks run away scared uncomfortable feel guilty save money surprised

16 4.“with+复合宾语”结构归纳 1) with + n./pron.+介词短语 e.g She said good-bye with tears in her eyes. 2) with + n./pron.+形容词 e.g I like sleeping with all windows open. 3) with + n./pron.+副词 e.g With Mr. Smith away, we’ve got more room. 4)with + n./pron.+现在分词 e.g I won’t be able to go on a holiday with my mother being ill. 5)with + n./pron.+过去分词 e.g He was brought in, with his hands tied behind his back. 6)with + n./pron.+不定式 e.g With so much homework to do, he couldn’t go out for play. 5. Inside was the seven dollars and a short note that said, ”I’m proud of you.” 本句是倒装句,正常语序应为: The seven dollars and a short note was inside…, 如果不倒装,则出现两个问题,一是主语太长,显得头重脚轻;二是后面的定语从句和先行词分隔太远,易造成误解。 e.g On the floor lay a boy who was terribly hurt.

17 Homework Divide the class into two groups.Group 1 acts as ”I” in the reading.Group 2 acts as “the old lady”.Group l is to apologize to the old lady by writing an e--mail to her.Group 2 is to write back in the name of the old lady. The useful expressions on page60 may help you.
