The CoreGRID Network of Excellence (NoE) aims at strengthening and advancing scientific and technological excellence in the area of Grid and Peer-to-Peer technologies. To achieve this objective, the Network brings together a critical mass of well-established researchers (119 permanent researchers and 165 PhD students) from forty-two institutions who have constructed an ambitious joint programme of activities. This joint programme of activity is structured around six complementary research areas that have been selected on the basis of their strategic importance, their research challenges and the recognised European expertise to develop next generation Grid middleware, namely:
* knowledge & data management;
* programming models;
* system architecture;
* Grid information, resource and workflow monitoring services;
* resource management and scheduling;
* Grid systems, tools and environments.
It is funded by a European grant (8.2 M euros) assigned to the CoreGRID NoE, for a duration of four years (starting September 1st, 2004), to cover the integration costs while the network partners cover the expense required to perform the research associated with the joint programme of activities.

6. Mandate Studying a common storage security model in a Grid environment
Define a Grid level common authorisation framework for data access
At which levels should data access control be enforced (authorization credentials distribution to Grid-enabled storage systems, definition of Grid security policies based on such credentials)
Define how to map grid level authorization to local access control systems for storages
Specification and certification of storage system security capabilities (security QoS)
Provide use cases for security storage access in different application domains

Description of work done by each research group FORTH, INFN:
Passive and Active Monitoring for GRID infrastructure monitoring
FORTH and INFN formed a research group starting the work on integration
of passive and active monitoring for GRID infrastructure, distributed
configuration of GRID passive and active monitoring sensors and passive
traffic monitoring for GRIDs.
The research group designed the architecture of the Network Monitoring Element, the building block of the monitoring architecture. Its modular structure identifies a sensor component, which is in charge of carrying out network monitoring sessions using passive monitoring techniques, a database proxy, which gives local accessibility to the state of the distributed database, and the Network monitoring service, which provides an application (user) interface.

Tema:
gestione di "workflow", cioe' di un insieme di attivita‘ computazionali correlate tra di loro in base, ad esempio, a dipendenze temporali o di disponbilita' di dati.
Descrizione:
Lo studio avra' come oggetti principalmente le modalita' di descrizione di un workflow, sia dal punto di vista sintattico che semantico, e le peculiarita' di un workflow eseguito sulla Grid, in particolare legate ad affidabilita' e prestazioni.
Il lavoro implementativo riguardera' invece soprattutto lo sviluppo di un prototipo di motore di workflow di grid con l'obiettivo di integrarlo in gLite, l'attuale middleware di Grid a cui contribuisce in modo sostanziale l'INFN.
