President Johnson campaigned against the Radical Republicans in the congressional elections of He attacked the Fourteenth Amendment (No state could take away a citizens life, liberty, or property without due process of the law) and made it a major issue in the campaign. Remember, President Johnson believed that “White men alone must manage the south.

4. Many northerners disliked Johnsons tone, and some feared the clashes between whites and African Americans that were taking place in the South. Voters rejected Johnsons view, and the Republicans won an overwhelming majority in Congress.

5. This meant that Johnson could no longer prevent them from overriding his vetoes. A period known as Radical Reconstruction was about to begin.
