Substantive Adjectives

“Substantive” sub = under
-stan- < sto, stare, stetī, staturus = to stand Ergo Substantive adjectives are adjectives that “stand in” for nouns and function as nouns. These adjectives are not modifying any nouns in the sentence. e.g. Bonī, Malī, Turpēs The good, the bad, and the ugly. Literally, the good (people), the bad (people), and the ugly (people)

Which words are the substantive adjectives?
Only the good die young. Robin Hood steals from the rich and gives to the poor. Aerosmith song: “Eat the Rich” The Fast and the Furious “We’re the Red and White from State and we know we are the best, one hand behind our back, we can take on all the rest, come o’er the hill Carolina, Devils and Deacs stay in line, the Red and White from N.C. State.”

Exemplī Gratia 23:12 (Chapter 23, line 12) - Multa et mira videbunt pueri, atque ego omnia eis explicabo. The neuter gender and plural number of multa, mira, and omnia imply the idea of “things” multa et mira = many (and) wonderful things omnia = all things = “everything”

Exemplōrum Gratia 19:1 (Ch.19, line 1) Cunctī in cauponam intraverunt. Masculine substantive adjectives refer to people in general, so cunctī may be translated “everybody.” Notate Bene: a Feminine substantive adjective would refer to women: Bonae in templum intraverunt. bonae = “good women”
