Problem Solving Methods
DMAIC – Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control DFSS – Design for Six Sigma PDCA – Plan, Do, Check, Act PDSA – Plan, Do, Study, Act TQM, PR, Kaizen, Pugh, WB, TRIZ – Theory of Inventive Problem Solving
4
TRIZ Principles Somebody, someplace, has already solved your problem or one similar to it. Creativity means finding that solution and adapting it to the current problem. Don't accept compromises. Eliminate them.
5
Somebody has Solved Your Problem
California Dairy Farmers needed a way to dry manure Heat became too expensive Solution – hydrophilic gas which carries water away Orange Juice Concentrate
6
Somebody has Solved Your Problem
Pharmaceutical industry needed a way to deal with excess foam from a pharmaceutical process Solution came from the beer industry Paint manufacturers needed a way to deal with sludge accumulation in equipment Solution came from nuclear waste disposal industry
7
Traditional Tradeoffs
Technical Contradictions Stronger at cost of additional weight Greater bandwidth requires more power Faster airbag deployment requires greater force Physical Contradictions Coffee hot enough to enjoy but not so hot as to burn Software powerful features but easy to use Surveillance quick to target but slow to collect data
8
TRIZ Tries to eliminate problems rather than accept compromise
Airbag material that can’t grab skin as it is deployed Car supersystem to avoid crashes Social system that prevents small persons from front seat Match book problem – dissolving Compromise when necessary
9
TRIZ Dissolution Technical Constraints
Technical contradictions solved through 40 problem solving principles Physical contradictions solved through 4 basic principles to look at supersystems, subsystems, separation of time, space, etc.
10
Self-heating Beverage Container
Contradictions Fast heating can cause steam pressure to rupture capsule Thin material allows heat transfer but isn’t strong enough Multiple thin layers strong enough but too expensive Metal top will allow traditional pop top but can burn lips
11
Self-heating Beverage Container
Principle 1 – segmentation, instead of blow molding container, satisfy layer requirement through die stamping operation

Improve Direct Mail Advertising
Customer wants knowledge of product, but doesn’t want to read Advertiser wants response to ads, but only from customers who are serious TRIZ led to techniques used in diet food industry and applied to patio building
