3 British in China The Opium War occurred in the late 1700’s because the British were selling opium in China China outlawed opium Demanded the British stopped selling it Chinese warships attacked & started a war China lost, was forced to sign unfair treaties British citizen aren’t subject the Chinese laws

4 Rebellion & Take Over Unhappy & starving Chinese peasants start the Taiping Rebellion in 1850 20-30 million Chinese died Weakens China even more Russia & Japan seize territory The Europeans carved up different spheres of influence America called for an Open Door Policy Everyone be allowed equal access to trade with China

5 Reform & Uprising China attempted to modernize during the Hundred Days of Reform. Conservatives rallied against reform It was seen as being western These feelings lead to the Boxer Uprising In 1900 the Boxers attacked foreigners all over China The rebellion used traditional Chinese martial arts and weapons The western nations joined forces & easily defeated the uprising.

6 Birth of a Republic China was now forced to support modernization.
Sun Yixian started the “Three Principles of the People” Nationalism, Democracy, and Economic Security Sun Yixian will become very popular and will become President after the empress died

7 American & Japan After Britain’s success in China during the Opium war, America will set its sights on Japan. Japan had never opened up to foreigners U.S. used Gun Boat Diplomacy Commodore Matthew Perry parked a battleship in Tokyo Bay Forced Japan to open up for trade

8 Meiji Restoration Japan was embarrassed by the way the U.S. treated them Decided to modernize & become powerful. This was known as the Meiji Restoration The motto “A rich country, a strong military” Many Japanese families became rich The Kawasaki family

9 Japanese Imperialism Japan’s growing strength allows them to practice imperialism They will fight the Sino-Japanese war against China Gain Taiwan. Next they defeated Russia in the Russo-Japanese War Gain Korea & Manchuria This allows Japan to gain vital resources needed for industrialization.

10 Australia Australia contained indigenous or native people. (Aborigines) Australia began as a Penal Colony The British sent prisoners there to pay for their crimes Minerals & Gems are discovered causing free people to move there. As more people arrived they began to demand independence Britain made them a Commonwealth

11 New Zealand Natives in New Zealand were known as the Maori.
They were more concentrated in New Zealand. When the Europeans arrived there were wars between the two peoples. The Maori were devastated & the British took over. They too would became a part of the British Commonwealth
