Vocabulary Academic Definition Human Definition
Alliteration - the repetition of consonant sounds, usually at the beginning of words. Alliteration is marked in blue. Assonance - the repetition of vowel sounds, usually within words. Assonance is marked in yellow Personification: the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form. Foreshadowing-literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story. Alliteration- all first letters/sounds the same. Assonance – middle sounds same Personification – giving human characteristics to something not real - “the tree whishpered in the wind,” “the ball scurriend into the basket encouraged by the screaming fans.” Foreshadowing – think “Jaws” music right before someone loses a leg.

Slant rhyme: rhyme in which either the vowels or the consonants of stressed syllables are identical, Repetition: the action of repeating something that has already been said or written. Repetition will be marked in green/ circled. Rhyme Scheme: the ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of the lines of a poem or verse.
Stanza: poetry paragraph. Stanzas will be numbered. Internal rhyme - the rhyming of words within a line of poetry, not just at the end of the lines. Internal rhymes are marked in red. Slant Rhyme: half rhyme eyes/light; years/yours Repetition: repeating words, phrases or actions (think chorus in music) Internal rhyme – Rhyme inside a line
