Pope hoped to increase his power in Europe
Also wanted European Christian Knights to stop fighting each other…instead fight the Muslims

3. 4 Crusades…Only one was successful
The 1st Crusade did capture Jerusalem in 1099….then the knights massacred all the residents of Jerusalem (Jews and Muslims)
3 more crusades over the next 200 years eventually resulted in the Muslims retaking the “Holy land” and massacring Christians

4. What did 200 years of religious warfare accomplish?
The Church in Europe weakens, and the kings gain power (This will help to end Feudalism)
Europe’s economy gets better. Knights returning from Crusades bring new goods to trade
Increase in the use of paper money in Europe to pay for these new goods
MOST IMPORTANT…..THE MUSLIMS IN THE MIDDLE EAST WERE MUCH MORE TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED THEN EUROPE….THE CRUSADERS BRING BACK NEW IDEAS, KNOWLEDGE, AND AN EXPANDED WORLD VIEW THAT IS GOING TO CHANGE EVERYTHING IN EUROPE

5. Reconquista….Crusade in Spain
Muslims had controlled Spain for centuries, The Reconquista was successful at throwing the Muslims out of Spain
The Inquisition…Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain want religious tolerance ended and unity
Jews and Muslims are forced to convert to Christianity
If they refuse…The are put on trial by the inquisition,
punishments include expulsion or death
1492 all Jews are expelled from Spain
