1 Peter 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ: Clearly Prominent among the Twelve Disciples (The Gospels) A Pillar in the Early Church (Acts 1-12, 15; Galatians 2:9)

To whom was it written? “Peter uses two words that turn the world upside down for those inhabitants of Asia Minor, and for us. He calls them the scattered (dispersed) people, and says that they are strangers (exiles), aliens who are transients, temporary residents, travelers headed for their native land.”

To whom was it written? “These terms give us the key to Peter’s whole letter. Peter is writing a travelers’ guide for Christian pilgrims. He reminds them that their hope is anchored in their homeland. They are called to endure alienation as strangers, but they have a heavenly citizenship and destiny.” (Edmund Clowney)

Three Key Words 1. “suffer” (16 times) 1 Peter 1:6 You rejoice in this, even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials.

Three Key Words 2. “sober” (3 times) 1 Peter 1:13 Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be sober-minded and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Three Key Words 3. “hope” (5 times) 1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

1. “suffering” (16 times) 2. “sober: (3 times) 3. “hope” (5 times) Peter writes to these suffering Christians in order that they would be calm, sober-minded in the midst of their trials; clearly focusing on the HOPE that was theirs in Christ as they lived in exile on earth!

Three Key Sections Peter begins his letter with instruction on EMBRACING OUR LIVING HOPE! (1:3-2:10) Then he moves on with a section that is primarily an exhortation to APPLY OUR LIVING HOPE (2:11-4:11) He wraps up with a final section, COMFORTING them as he encourages them to TRUST OUR LIVING HOPE (4:12-5:11)

I Peter: Our Living Hope
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ: To those chosen, living as exiles dispersed abroad in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient and to be sprinkled with the blood of Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
