Monday 3/27 Materials: Journal, writing utensil, paper, & Textbook
Think of the biggest argument you’ve ever been in with someone. Describe what happened. Did it get physical? Be detailed! Pull me into the conflict (metaphorically)!
2
Agenda: Journals Discussion Bathroom Pass! Simplexity
3
Open textbooks to “Simplexity” on Page 129-132
Read through the background section and answer the following questions before you begin reading: What would make Mr. Kluger qualified to write this piece? Would you consider evacuating a building to be a “simple process”?
4
“Simplexity” on page 129-132 Questions on page 134
You are to answer questions 1-6 IN COMPLETE SENTENCES/ACE FORMAT. Example: Question #2 Using context clues in lines 19-34, determine the technical meaning of complexity arc as it is used in the text. Complete Sentence Response: The technical meaning of complexity arc as it is used in lines is ________________________. Once you are finished…place your questions into the bin.

Tuesday 3/28 Materials: Journals, Paper from yesterday (if you have room), Handout, & textbook
Tell me about a specific incident that explains what your family is like. If someone had to get to know them through one story– which would it be? If you can’t think of that one story– then tell me about your family and what your role is…
6
Read the handout that you got from the front of the class and answer the following questions comparing this to the piece we read yesterday called “Simplexity”…
7
Which of the following is the best objective summary for Simplexity?
Simplexity discusses how, through human behavior, students can learn different techniques in studying that will allow them to graduate early. Simplexity discusses how differences in human behavior can take what should be a simple task and make it more complex with behavior variables that apply to planning an evacuation plan. Simplexity discusses how differences in human behavior can take seemingly difficult tasks and make them very simple for everyone during an evacuation of a building, even when a plane hits it. Simplexity discusses the discourse of how to take a difficult concept and make it even harder for humans with irregular behavior to understand.
8
Which of the following is the central idea of Simplexity?
The reason many people did not escape the twin towers was a combination of the planes hitting the building and the varied movements of the people in the buildings. Human beings are like water particles in a crisis situation; they just flow to the exit without any problems. Due to basic human nature and varied levels of decision making skills, human response to crisis situations can greatly depend on engineering solutions for complex systems. The reason many people did not escape the twin towers was because the smoke in the building caused issues with being able to locate exit signs that would have lead everyone to safety.
9
Which piece of evidence best supports the central theme of Simplexity?
“Ultimately, we’re mislead by our most basic instincts- the belief that we know where the danger is and how best to respond to keep ourselves alive, when in fact we sometimes have no idea at all.” “Designers of interior spaces have found that a perfectly useless post positioned along the path to a fire exit may actually help people escape.” “In response to such problems, evacuation software has gotten a lot more sophisticated.” “People have different levels of decision-making skills, with some inevitably behaving more rationally than others.”
10
What statement best connects both “Simplexity” and “My 911 Escape From the World Trade Center”?
It has been scientifically proven that crisis situations can be designed to allow people to be lead to safety. When in a crisis situation, people will opt for the most popular looking exit and follow those leading even if they have no idea where they are going. After experiencing a crisis, there is nothing that can keep someone from feeling the after effects of guilt or flashbacks. Pure speed in a stairwell is hard to maintain as the human nature of those evacuating will inherently get in the way, causing limitations in a successful evacuation model.

Wednesday 3/29 Materials: Journal
Can you think of the turning point when you became closer with one of your friends? What prompted this to happen? Are you still close now because of it?
12
Answer the following technology survey:
I am on my cell phone, probably _________ hours a day. When I do not have my cell phone on me, I feel __________. The technology that I feel that I use the most is _____________________. I believe that technology helps more than it hurts (True/False). If a robot could go to school for me– I would allow it to. Technology can easily replace face-to-face interaction (True/False). Does your family have a computer or tablet at home? Does your family have a printer at home? Since what grade have you been using computers at home. I am more than likely to use my phone for games than I am for socializing.

Vocabulary Prep For Friday/Quizlet
Once you have finished the technology survey, I would like for you to prep for Friday’s vocabulary review. I would like for each of you to send me a link to your quizlet accounts. I want to see all of the words we have done so far on there… You can spend the rest of the class getting that together and submit these to me by Friday to my gmail: If you send it to the county I will delete it and you will receive a zero.
14
Materials: Journal (DO NOT PUT AWAY TILL AFTER CLASS!) Poem handout Zip lock bag Thursday 3/30/17 Journal: Select the statement you believe is most true. You have 5 minutes to do a fast write in which you explain and support your answer. Technology will be the salvation of humankind OR Technology will be the destruction of humankind
15
Independently… Think Pair Share… Class Discussion…
Read the poem “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Sara Teasdale. Discuss this question: How does the poet imagine nature would respond to the eradication of humankind? Share your TPS thoughts and cite evidence Think Pair Share… Class Discussion…
16
While You Listen… Listen carefully so you can hear the details of the story. Place the pictures in the order you think the story is being told.
17
Graphic Class Chat What is missing in both the poem and the story?
How does the home continue to function? Would you consider Bradbury’s description of our technology in his story advanced? What is ironic about the title of the story? What do you think the theme of the story is?
18
Compare/Contrast Post-humankind Images

Go back to your journal… Did your thinking change. If so, how
Go back to your journal… Did your thinking change? If so, how? If not, why not? Support your answer and place it on the next sheet. Technology will be the salvation of humankind OR Technology will be the destruction of humankind

Friday 3/31 Materials: Journals
Do you think human connection (friendships and relationships in general) is the point/purpose of life? How have they played a role in your life? Explain using your own personal experiences.
21
Agenda: Journal Discussion
