Aims Learning Outcome 3 Understand the concept of sustainability as it applies to the construction and built environment sector Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
3
Objectives To identify the benefits of using sustainable construction (P5) To describe the benefits of using sustainable construction (P6) To compare two local and national benefits of taking a sustainable construction approach (M2)

Introduction The are two types of benefits to examine with regard to the benefits of sustainability construction The Local Benefits The National Benefits Employment Cleaner Air Social benefits community consultation and local involvement Reduction in Flooding Green spaces Changing education Aesthetics Conservation of resources Improved Environments Economic well-being Regeneration Environmental protection Tourism Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Employment Employment is a key aspect of sustainability and it must be considered when planning social elements, without it people will have no chance to work and then reinvest in the local economy. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
7
Social benefits, community consultation and local involvement.
An essential principles of sustainability is getting all the people involved with the development through community consultation. Making the community part of the decision making process helps create a social sense of belonging, reduces people's fears about the development and have a say in the end product. What are the benefits of this involvement? Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Green spaces Including green space in any development is another key principles of sustainability. Having trees, other planting and open areas of activities gives a community somewhere to relax and socialise. On a larger scale the government has provided green belts around cities and the UK has a network of 14 national parks and use and enjoy Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Aesthetics Aesthetics is about the way things look. Sustainable design often involves creating attractive buildings with the emphasis is on using natural materials to such as cedar boarding. An attractive environment appeals more than one that is old and run down. Does good design make an environment a pleasant place to live and work? Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Improved environments
The government and the European union commit funding to areas deemed to be enterpriser zones. These are areas of high unemployment which have lost industries because of recession on market changes. By providing 'start-up' investment they encourage many more investors to come into the development and support it. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Regeneration Urban regeneration process of reusing or clearing derelict buildings from inner city areas and replacing these with new developments. Regeneration can have a profound effect on a rundown area. Many old warehouses in coastal cities such as Liverpool and Hull have been converted into housing and shops which provide local employment and attracts tourists Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Cleaner Air Many cities where fossil fuels are widely used and traffic levels are high suffer from a problem called photochemical smoke. Smoke results from the build-up of exhaust particles in the atmosphere which causes and pollution and this can cause lung disease. The global drive to reduce the exhaust emissions brings the benefit of clean air. In the UK the local authority will continually monitor and air quality to ensure that emissions will be below the levels set Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Reduction in flooding Reducing CO2 emissions should help the rise of the earths temperature, but this could take many years. The current rise in sea levels and climate-induced thunderstorms should return to normal. Sustainable measures that can be employed to reduce flooding include: SUDS Ponds and lakes Swales and basins Separate surface and foul drainage Porous hard surfacing These all aim to reduce the run off into watercourses, which reduces the likelihood of river levels rising above bank level, causing flooding Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Changing education For sustainability to be a success, current and future generations need to be re-educated. Teaching people not to leave equipment on standby, to turn down the heating, to buy a more fuel efficient car and to recycle everything can produce individual benefits, but if we all adopt these principles the changes will have a national impact. The government has introduced sustainability topics into many curriculum syllabuses to change attitudes among younger people. Public awareness campaigns on issues such as using fewer plastic bags can play their part in creating a more sustainable future. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
17
Conservation of resources
Employing sustainable techniques in design and construction will: Extend the life of our finite resources Give us time to develop and implement alternative energy source Allow time for changes in technology to reduce our reliance on oil and gas power and fuel Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Economic well-being Having a stable sustainable economy brings many benefits not only for the individual but also the government The individual The government Increase in ownership of own home Increased revenue from taxation A healthier lifestyle Less strain on national health services Produces a better place to live Reduction in infrastructure congestion Cleaner air Reduction on crime figures Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
19
Better quality standards
Sustainability often involves spending more on better quality products and materials that will last longer into the future. For example welsh roof slates will last a minimum 125 years and will always look fresh. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Government benefits For the government, sustainability brings its own benefits, including: a reduction in road traffic, meaning lower road maintenance Increased development of sustainable transport systems, such as trams, to service communities Cleaner air which leads to better health for all.
