29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. 7
God created Male & Female in His image
8
1:1, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
God existed before any matter was created; God is self sufficient, He is not dependent on anyone or anything.
9
1:1, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth
1:1, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. God and the Holy Spirit created everything out of nothing.
10
Col 1:16, For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.
11
The pronoun “him” is Jesus.
God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit created everything in the heavens and everything on earth.
12
Genesis means “origin.”
Every child wants to know where they come from. Genesis is about the origin of man.
13
It is important to know our history or origin because our sense of worth depends on our understanding of our origin.
14
1:25, And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds … And God saw that it was good. God created the animals and said it was good.
15
Genesis is about the creation of man and woman.
16
1:26, Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness … 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
17
God created men and women in his own image; the animals were not created in his image.
18
Since God created male and female in his image, boys and girls should have the same worth; the boys are not more valuable than girls.
19
The fall of man distorted our value system and since then many cultures devalue girls and treat them as less valuable Some even dehumanize them and sell them as commodities or goods to be consumed by men.
20
1:28, And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
21
God doesn’t bless the animals, only the man & woman.
God bless the man and woman at their marriage and command them to have children to fill the earth.
22
1:31, And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.
23
When God created the stars and galaxies he said, “it was good;”
When God created the fish, birds and land animals he said, “it was good;” But when he created man and woman, he blessed them and said “it was very good.”
24
2:7, the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
25
The focus of chapter 1 is God; the focus of chapter 2 is man.
Although man is created from dust, he has great worth because God breathed the spirit into him - the animals do not have spirits.
26
2:9, And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground - trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
27
God is the Provider, he provides everything for man.
28
If God is so good to man, then why do God test man with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?
29
A rich man wants to know if his friends & family love him for him or for his money.
In the same way, God wants to know if man loves him for Him or for the things that he can provide for them.
30
2:15, The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
31
The Lord didn’t put the animals in charge of the garden.
He put man in charge of the garden and animals. We have the responsibility to take care of God’s creation and environment.
32
2:16, And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
33
Man and woman are created with a free will; they are capable of choosing right from wrong.
God doesn’t tell a machine or an animal to choose because they don’t have any free will.
34
2:19, Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air … 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
35
God gave authority to Adam so he named all the animals.
Man was created as a social creature so he longed to have fellowship with someone who was created with a spirit & soul.
36
2:22, Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. Then the man said, “She shall be called Woman, because she is taken out of Man.
37
Naming is important because it gives us an identity.
After God redeemed us, He gives us new names & identities Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people. We are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, and a holy nation.
38
2:24, For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. God created marriages.
39
Before the fall, man and wife complemented each other, they served God as a team.
Before the fall, they had nothing shameful to hide from each other; after they disobeyed God, they felt ashamed and hid from God and from each other.
40
Is the creation of male and female, fact or myth?
41
Mt 19:4, "Haven't you read, that at the beginning the Creator `made them male and female,' 5 and said, `For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh' ?
42
6 So they are no longer two, but one
6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.
43
God made male and female so both man and woman have the same worth.
God’s intention is husband and wife will have a life long marital relationship with each other.
44
When a man is married to a woman, they become one.
It is a fusion of body and soul. It is like two tributaries flowing into one river.
45
Divorce is the work of the fallen man and woman.
When marriages fail and end in divorces, everyone loses a piece of self or soul behind. The gospel is Jesus can restore broken souls and make them whole again.
