1 Airport Operations and Safety Now and In the Future
Association of California Airports 2017 Tahoe Conference

2 Is Your Airport Safe?

3 How Do You Inspect Your Airport?
Airport Inspections – What’s In YOUR Checklist? Airports should develop, retain, maintain and update a self-inspection checlist that can be used on a daily basis to ensure the safety condition of the airport At a minimum all public use airports are required to follow the FAA’s A Safety Data Program guidelines to ensure compliance with the airport data on file Does your inspection reflect your latest ALP? Don’t just wait for the folks from CalTrans to tell you what isn’t right Other Things To Include Security issues – fencing, gates, cameras FBO, Tenant and Hangar status Wildlife Management Issues Airport Construction Projects – changes, barricades, runway X’s Pavement condition, edges of pavement, lights, Navaids etc

4 What Else Should I Know and Do?
Most of this is common sense but here are some other considerations to help keep your airport safe Understand the FAA AC’s and 139 requirements (even if you aren’t a 139 airport) and how you currently comply…OR NOT! Know Your Safety Zones (both FAA and CLUP) for height restrictions and obstructions Be Proactive about your Airspace, Pattern and Flight Procedures – Don’t just leave this to the FAA Keep Your Airport Trucks Well Equipped (spill kits, rakes, shovels, brooms, runway/taxiway light bulbs, camera, accident/incident report forms, first aid kit, AED) If you can fix problems while you are inspecting the airport you can save time

5 Bob Dylan: For The Times They Are a Changin’
Future of Airport Ops and Safety Lots of changes in our near future Don’t be left behind…be prepared for the changes Most changes will result in lower cost and more efficiency Safety Management Systems – What Are They? FAA’s SMS Program – Designed for 139 airports, but everyone can benefit from establishing some type of SMS program. FBO SMS Program – IS-BAH modeled after very successful IS-BAO program for Flight Departments Airport Operations Management Software/Apps Real Time Electronic Inspection Checklists and Reporting GPS Based Mapping – Infrastructure Maintenance Revenue Tracking Use of Drones/Lidar Sensors for Airport Inspections/FOD Checks Remote/Virtual Towers Autonomous Vehicles – Taxis/Rentals/Buses…eventually airplanes
