Sex Education Advisory Board
1. Based on Michigan § 2. Required in districts offering sex education 3. Responsibilities include, in part: A. Establish program goals and objectives for pupil knowledge and skills that are likely to reduce the rates of sex, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases. B. Review the materials and methods of instruction used and make recommendations to the school board. C. At least once every 2 years, evaluate, measure, and report the attainment of program goals and objectives.

Public Hearings Requirement
Before adopting/revising any materials or methods for sex ed instruction, at least two public hearings must be held From § (5a) Hearing will include Presentation on proposed revisions/additions Public comment and Q&A

SEAB Composition 1. At least half the SEAB membership must consist of parents of children attending MPPS schools. 2. SEAB membership must also include: A. MPPS students B. Teachers C. Local clergy D. Health professionals 3. SEABs must include two co-chairs A. At least one co-chair must be a parent of a child in the district schools.

State Requirements MUST include instruction on dangerous communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDS (including modes of transmission, best methods for prevention/restriction of transmission, emphasis on abstinence as only method that is 100% effective). MAY include instruction in sex education Must be age-appropriate Must not be medically inaccurate Must include specific content including benefits of abstinence; emotional/ economic/legal consequences of sex; possibilities of pregnancy and/or STIs; laws regarding responsibilities as parents and re sexual contact with children under 16; refusal skills; healthy dating behaviors; Safe Delivery of Newborns Law and adoption services May include risk reduction strategies (e.g., condom use, contraception) MAY NOT include references to abortion as a method of family planning or reproductive health

Puberty: The Wonder Years
Updated version of curriculum already in use in 5th, 6th, and 7th grades New version revised for use in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades (Will continue to use in 7th grade for upcoming year) Available in Central Office; info available at Approved at 2/2/16 SEAB meeting Rationale: Recommended by MDE; fits well with Michigan Model Multi-year program allows for iterative learning of material Program has been well received by teachers, students, and parents Classes have regularly met health outcomes via this program Wanting to use most updated versions available
