2 Objective-SWBAT understand what problems faced the people who lived in urban areas, as well as the actions that addressed those problems. Daily Vocabulary- Settlement house, skyscraper

3 The rapid growth of cities led to some serious problems, as garbage and manure piled up in the streets. All the filth acted as a breeding ground for quickly spreading disease. What can some effects of this be? (Turn and talk)

4 In one Chicago neighborhood in 1900, large number of babies died of such ailments as whooping cough, diphtheria, or measles. What could be done to control this outbreak of disease?

5 Officials screened schoolchildren for contagious diseases, sent visiting nurses to mothers with young children, and set up public health clinics.

6 Poverty in cities often led to crime
Poverty in cities often led to crime. Gangs often roamed the poor neighborhoods. What are some solutions you think can be put into place to help solve the problems in cities? (Turn and talk) Many dedicated people worked to improve urban life and help the poor. Some of this help came from religious groups that ran orphanages, prisons, hospitals, and recreation centers. Establishments called settlement houses offered many types of assistance to the urban poor.

7 Guided Practice As a class, we will popcorn read a passage titled, “Building to the Sky/Finding Beauty in City Life”, and answer the following comprehension questions: There were three inventions we have just read about (elevator, skyscraper, Woolworth Building). Which technological accomplishment made the other two possible? What was the purpose of the “City Beautiful” movement?

8 Independent Practice Students will independently read the passage “Modern Forms of Transportation/Bridges and Transportation” and answer the following comprehension questions: What problems were solved by the use of streetcars, horse cars, cable cars, and subways? What is the purpose of a bridge? Who might need to use bridges?

9 Group Work Create a T chart discussing the positives and negatives of the growth of large cities. Growth of large cities Positives Negatives

10 Homework What were some of the efforts made to improve city life in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s?
