1 Asbestos – Getting the Data Right
Peter Harris – Mile End Hospital – Case study

2 Mile End Hospital Case Study - Background
Largely a late Victorian site Huge history of project and refurbishments Asbestos had been introduced over decades in the 1900s A long established user of the IPR and asbestos Has historically managed asbestos Proactive passionate onsite estates manager Hadn't succeeded with the asbestos module

3 The phone call from Steve Royce…
April 2015 The phone call from Steve Royce…

4 The call Content… Opening line: Peter, your asbestos software is rubbish! I know I am manging the risk but I can’t evidence it I can’t use the system It’s a nightmare My contractors can’t use it My colleagues cant use it Its so bad even Floody cant use it!

5 My response Steve, the client is always right but in this case and with total respect you are wrong! Let me come and see you A week later I went to see Steve and despite Steve being someone who has a good track record on asbestos management, this is what I found…

6 The Bird’s eye view

7 The data issue Like many clients data was in the system but with holes preventing data compliance

8 Typical example

9 The Most Common Data Issue
Spaces without an assessment being undertaken No re-inspection event data set No access assigned but with no assessment undertaken Consultants not referencing their samples correctly Lack of photographic evidence Documents including , survey reports, 4 stage clearance tests, method statement etc not being published to the system

10 How we solved the problem
Steve listened and took time to learn the system capabilities A training session was undertaken He engaged his consultants He specified exactly what he wanted and how he wanted the system to demonstrate his success He pushed hard and started getting results quickly A few buildings were piloted to ensure through new surveys and re-inspections that the data was housed correctly in the Micad system Once the benchmark was set the rest of buildings were completed The journey and results..

11 Within 6 month – Total data Compliance

12 Management console

13 Proof of success Steve now uses the system to benchmark the consultants performance Now the data is correct, keeping it compliant is so much easier Absolute clarity exists as to what needs responding to in terms of managing risk and re-inspections This case study is now being used as a template for the other large hospital sites across the Barts NHS Trust This accurate data can now be fed to contractors and staff via the Asbestos Portal My phone calls with Steve are now much easier!

14 Key points to remember Remember it’s a duty to manage not survey
Who is responsible – you need a driver with ownership – Steve in this case study Make sure the is client in control of the data not the consultant Specify what you want your supplier to do Use Micad to benchmark their performance and show your data compliance – don’t pay them otherwise if you have written into your contract specification Use CAD or Space data Integration Set out to… Demonstrate complete compliance visibility with CAR2012 Reduced long term asbestos management costs (ROI) Reduce liability arising from exposure, claims and failure to meet statutory requirements Improved business practice - ‘Doing the right thing to become best in class’ Keep your staff and contractors safe
