Foods and nutrition Class Rules 1. Follow directions quickly. 2. Raise your hand for permission to speak. 3. Raise your hand leave the class & sign out. 4. Make smart choices. 5. Keep your dear teacher HAPPY.  Class Expectations Be punctual. Be on time and ready to learn. Conduct yourself as a mature, well-mannered young adult. Be prepared. Bring all supplies needed for class. Be respectful. Treat everyone with consideration, use respectful language, keep things neat, clean up after yourself. Be kind to all classmates, teachers, visitors, ideas, and opinions Be responsible. Clean up after yourself. Arrive class on time with all necessary materials. Complete assignments on time, ask questions when necessary, and stay aware of deadlines. Do what is right, regardless of what everyone else in class is doing. Be positive. Be nice to one another. Course Description Course Description: This course is designed to assist students in making critical decisions about food, which contributes to health and well-being. Laboratory instruction is included as an application process. Practical problems addressed relate to attitudes toward food, nutrition facts, special health concerns and diets, management of food resources, preparation skills, food safety, sanitation and careers in nutrition and food service. Leadership development will be provided through the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. Classroom Management In order for each student to feel safe and comfortable in my classroom, a positive and respectful attitude is expected of all students, this includes respecting others’ thoughts, work, feelings, and individuality. If a student does not demonstrate positive behavior, I will visit with him/her and we will try to resolve the issue together. If this proves unsuccessful, students will call their parents at home or work and explain their behavior. The third offense will be disciplinary action with Mr. Jones. Where do I go to find agendas and assignments? If you go to the Rowan County Website, click on schools and go to Rowan County Senior High School Homepage, on the left is a tab that says Teacher Websites, look for my name and click to go to my website. Once to my website you can click on the appropriate--Food and Nutrition. You will find course information, syllabus, announcements and assignments. I also use Remind 101. What happens if I turn in an assignment late? Work not completed and turned in by the assigned date is considered late and will occur a late penalty on the grade. If a student is absent on the date work is due, the alternate assignment will be given and due the next school day. It is the student responsibility to ask for any make-up work.

How will I check my grade in class? Grade Scale Parents and students are also strongly encouraged to check the Infinite Campus on a weekly basis to view the most current grades for EVERY class. A = 90% % B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79% D = 60% - 69% F = Below 60% Unsatisfactory I = Incomplete (No Credit) What do I do if I am absent? If you are absent, it is your responsibility to come to me the day you return to school to get any make-up work or alternate lab work for the day you missed. Do I have to read outside of class? An article will be assigned to read from time to time in order to get basic information or to keep current with the new trends in foods and nutrition issues. Some projects will require reading. What types of writing will I do this year? Lab Reflection Sheets will be completed for every lab in which students participate. Process Pieces will be writing pieces that go along with projects completed individually and as a group. What is a Student Notebook? Supplies The Student Notebook will be the three ring notebook that was listed in your supplies list filed with the filler paper. You will be expected to keep all assignments in the notebook. This will make for good reference for end of the semester exams as well as an archive of your recipes and projects from this class. One 3 ring binder Girls need a ponytail holder to leave in the room. One pkg. college-ruled filler paper Two rolls of paper towels One box of Kleenex Pencil Procedures for labs Closed toe shoes are required at all times in lab- No Flip Flops!!! No loose clothing and hair must be pulled back. Students should report to class on time and ready to start their assignment with Chef coat on and hands washed. What textbook will we use in this course? Adventures in Food and Nutrition!

3 Class Objective: 1. determine how changes in technology have increased food choices. 2. identify physical, social, cultural and economic influences and trends related to food choices. 3. explain how digestion turns food into usable nutrients (digestion, absorption, metabolism). 4. propose a balanced meal plan using the Dietary Guidelines for Healthy Living/Myplate.gov 5. examine how personal food choice affects nutrition, personal wellness and maintaining a healthy weight. 6. research various eating disorders and identify sources of help. 7. demonstrate and/or practice basic cooking methods to prepare a variety of foods. 8. identify and use basic kitchen equipment and tools. 9. managing a safe, effective and productive lab while utilizing teamwork. 10. practice measuring techniques for liquid and dry ingredients. 11. change yield of recipe. 12. inspect food labels for nutrition and food additives. 13. recognize the value of following a shopping plan for food. 14. calculate the difference in cost and identify variances in nutrition among semi-prepared, fully prepared convenience meals, fast food or other quick service meals, and home prepared foods. 15. calculate unit price, using comparison shopping methods, compare labels to create a meal plan based on cost and personal nutrition needs. 16. examine and select convenience foods according to time saved, the cost and the quality. 17. identify and practice various types of food presentation techniques. 18. practice dining etiquette and table set up when eating at a restaurant or in the home. 19. demonstrate waste disposal and recycling methods. 20. demonstrate proper safety, sanitation, storage and preparation techniques in handling food from purchase, preparation, cooking, cooling, to reheating. 21. categorize careers in nutrition/food service according to skill required and type of job. 22. assess employment opportunities and preparation requirements. 23. demonstrate employability and social skills relevant to the career cluster. 24. demonstrate safe, sanitary work habits required by the field. 25. demonstrate written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills. 26. demonstrate and practice knowledge of food service safety and sanitation procedures and the factors that contribute to food borne illnesses. 27. apply time management skills. 28. apply math, science and communication skills within technical content. 29. demonstrate employability and social skills relevant to the career cluster. 30. utilize activities of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America student organization as an integral component of course content and leadership development.
