4 All Good Summaries Always…
Contain all of the author’s main ideas Has to be based on the author’s ideas Has a simple title– A Short Summary of…. The first sentence states the name of the article, the name of the author (s), the author’s main idea. The last sentence should state how the author ended the article. The summary faithfully represents the author’s ideas. Are principally composed of paraphrasing the author’s ideas (this means to use your words to express another person’s ideas): this allows you to imagine these ideas—and soon, they become part of you, to be used by you, to be transformed by you, to help you construct a more complex view of the world.

5 All Good Summaries NEVER …
Never refer to the author using a first name only. They never “rant” (i.e., express the opinion of the summarizer) Never add ideas that were not in the original. Use pronouns that are unclear, i.e., anyone who is reading the summary cannot readily figure out to whom a pronoun refers. (pronoun-antecedent issues). Use direct quotations without quotation marks or without identifying who said what.
