1 What does this mean for my child?
mClass Reading 3D What does this mean for my child?

2 What is mClass Reading 3D?
Reading 3D is an assessment tool used to inform instruction for students in K-3rd grade. The assessment tool is comprised of two components: DIBELS & TRC. The assessments are teacher tools for informing and changing instruction to meet the child’s needs. The use of this assessment is sponsored by NCDPI, as a part of a state-wide effort to ensure every student is reading by the end of third grade.

3 DIBELS & TRC DIBELS assesses early literacy skills.
TRC assesses text reading comprehension. DIBELS = Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills TRC = Text Reading Comprehension **This will replace your child’s previous reading record. You will not receive your child’s level on the report card anymore; it will be sent home in an mCLASS letter.

5 Assessment Timeframes
Students will formally be assessed at the beginning, middle and end of the school year. Parents will receive a letter explaining the results of their child’s assessment called the Home Connect Letter.

6 How will teachers use the assessment results?
Assessment results will be used to determine your child’s reading strengths and weaknesses. Teachers will use this information to help each child. If students are below grade-level in any area, teachers will use the assessment data to guide their teaching and target that child’s area of need. Students will be monitored regularly to measure student progress. This regular progress monitoring will inform the teacher of instructional changes that need to be made.

7 How is Reading 3D different?
Assessments are timed. Students will be challenged with written comprehension questions after a certain reading level. Parents will receive individualized reports at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. Explain that students will still receive a reading level. Emphasize that the reading levels may not compare to last year’s. This is because the book publishers are different and there is a written comprehension component. Focus on the positive of the written comprehension - this expectation is aligned with 21st Century ready learners.

8 Now What? Each K-3 student will be assessed between September 9-27
Parents will receive a “Home Connect Letter” after the first assessment period explaining your child’s results Note the assessment dates - change if needed
