Welcome to the College of Nursing Baccalaureate Program for Registered Nurses
This presentation will provide you with introductory information you need before you start your nursing education program in September. Much of the information provided here will be expanded upon in the New Student Guide. Please make sure that you read the Guide carefully for important information. You may also want to have it on hand as you go through this presentation.

They are there to assist you and provide guidance and information as needed. Their contact information is found on the College’s web page and in the Appendix of the Guide.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Claim your UMnetID Non-academic requirements for admission - Deadline for submission: July 15th Current contact information University policies Final Completion of degree requirements is the responsibility of the student The first thing you need to do is to claim your u of M id and , if you have not already done so. All communication with anyone from the College of Nursing will be done through your U of M . Please refer to the College’s policy on communication on the web page and in the Guide. Students are responsible for completing non-academic requirements. Please refer to information in the Non-Academic Admission Requirements booklet, paying special attention to the deadlines for submission and consequences for non-compliance. Remember: You have been given provisional admission. Your admission may be revoked if the required documents are not received by July 15. It is your responsibilty to ensure that your contact information is kept current and that the College is aware of any changes. As well, you are responsible for being aware of and knowledgeable about University and College policies that are related to you and your progression through the program. Policies can be found in the on-line Calendar and on the University’s and College’s web pages. Please review these policies regularly as these are updated when changes are made. Most importantly – final completion of degree requirements is the student’s responsibility – it’s all up to you!

Associate Dean reviews immunization records after July 15th CPR (Level C Health Care Provider) Thereafter, recertification due June 1st Students who are CPR instructors must also recertify annually Criminal Records Check, Child Abuse Registry, & Adult Abuse Registry Respiratory Mask Fit Testing WRHA PHIA Here is a reminder of documents that are due on July 15th . Again, please refer to the Non-Academic Admission Requirement booklet and the New Student Guide. It is your responsibility to ensure that all documents are submitted on time as your admission may be revoked if any of the requirements are incomplete. Please make sure that you keep a copy of all your documents before submitting them to our staff in 262 Helen Glass or the College’s reception desk.

MANDATORY ANNUAL INFLUENZA VACCINATION
Required of all students in Nursing Documentation required by published deadline Non-Compliance by published deadline – de-registered in Winter Term Courses An annual influenza vaccination is required by all students in the College of Nursing. The deadline for obtaining the influenza vaccination and submitting documentation will be determined and published each fall. Expect that the deadline will be on, or around, December 1, and obtain the influenza vaccination as soon as it is available in the fall. If you do not obtain the influenza vaccination and submit documentation by the published deadline, you will be de-registered from your Winter Term courses.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS TOTAL PROGRAM = 45 CREDIT HOURS
Core Courses (26 Credit Hours) Non –Nursing Electives (9 Credit Hours) At least 3 Credit Hours of the above must be at the 2000 level or higher Nursing Electives (10 Credit Hours) Maintain a minimum GPA of umanitoba.ca/faculties/nursing/current/undergrad/policies/ assessment policy Now that we’ve talked about your responsibilities, let’s talk about planning your program. The Program is a total of 45 credit hours. This includes 19 credit hours of Stream or Focus courses 9 credit hours of Non-Nursing Electives 10 credit hours of Nursing Electives You must maintain a minimum grade of “C” in each course, a Term GPA of 2.50, and a Degree GPA of 2.5 Check the Calendar and the website link on this slide and read the assessment/academic progression policy carefully.

Information about time table layouts and patterns in the College of Nursing are found at the College’s website It is very important to check AURORA student for changes in the course schedule before you register

DISTANCE EDUCATION GUIDE
Lists Online/Correspondence (non-nursing) Contains Summer Distance courses Summer Distance starts in January or May The Distance Education Guide is a good source of information for students wanting to take non-nursing electives either by correspondence or online.

Important information and announcements are found on the College of Nursing Website and on the bulletin board by room 260 Helen Glass Centre for Nursing Announcements will also be posted on D2L course webpages Check all of these regularly for program information and other updates.

CURRICULUM Website: Talk to your student advisor for information about course sequencing, and other questions. The curriculum can be confusing – your student advisor can answer your questions.

5 YEAR PLANNING FORM This is an example of the 5 Year Planning Form. You will need to submit this form in May every year you are in the program.

COURSE SEQUENCING It is recommended that NURS 3430 (Seminar in Professional Nursing Foundations) be completed within the first 12 hours of the program. The rest may be in any order with the exception of NURS 4210 (Independent Study in Nursing Practice)which requires at least 35 credit hours to be completed prior to taking. Though students may take courses in any order, it is recommended that students take courses according to the five year plan as some courses are offered in alternate years.

FAILED COURSES “D” is a failure
Required to withdraw from the program following a second failure in the same nursing course OR in ANY TWO nursing clinical courses A “D” in any course is considered a failure by the College of Nursing If you received a “D” in a required course, it must be repeated. If the “D” is for an elective course, it may be repeated or replaced. Remember that your most recent attempt counts in your GPA. Students are required to withdraw from the program following a second failure in the same nursing course OR in ANY TWO nursing clinical courses Students who are required to withdraw are ineligible for re-admission See your student advisor if you fail a course.

INTER-FACULTY OPTION IN AGING
Website: Students are encouraged to consider the inter-Faculty option in aging Students who take this option will gain expertise in the aging related field, which is a growing aspect of health care. The option in aging comment is added to your transcript when you graduate Consult with a nursing student advisor to ensure you are meeting the requirements for the option in aging Inform your advisor each time you complete one of the required courses. NURSING REGISTRATION ACADEMIC SUMMARIES Show transfer credits
Check your summary carefully to make sure information is correct The Academic Summary that you will receive indicates the courses that you may have completed previously that are applied to your Nursing program. You can also use this document to fill in the courses as you complete them. Check the Academic Summary carefully and ensure that the information is correct. Please meet with a Nursing Student Advisor if you have questions or concerns regarding your transferred courses.

AWARDS AND BURSARIES Bursaries Scholarships
Financial Aid and Awards Office – 422 University Centre Awards and Bursaries are available. Bursaries are based on financial need. To apply all students must fill out a general bursary application. The deadline for application is due October 1. Some scholarships are awarded automatically; students must apply for others. The Financial Aid and Awards Office is located at 422 University Centre. Information on awards, scholarships and bursaries are available on the Financial Aids and Awards web pages, the College’s web pages, and they may also be posted on the bulletin board outside of Room 260.
